I'm trying to test backfill ads with my custom setup and am having trouble. I see this:

To test the behavior of native backfill ads, use this DFP ad unit:

/6499/example/native-backfill

It will serve sample app install and content ads that include the AdChoices overlay.

but using that i get an invalid request error saying "Cannot determine request type. Is your ad unit id correct?"

I can get the other test content ads successfully, /6499/example/native

Hi there,

Have you tried to test that Ad Unit ID with our sample app? I was able to receive ads using that tag.

Thanks,

thanks so much for the help, i really appreciate it! i did see the sample app, but didn't see the type of custom setup I had, but I'll take another look. Can you just confirm that backfill ads are possible with the custom rendering approach?

Hi there,

Native Backfill ads are only for App Install and Content ads and not for Custom Native Ads. You need to use Direct-Sold for Custom Native Ads.

thanks! i was wondering if that was the case, but then i found this: https://support.google.com/dfp_premium/answer/6366910?hl=en which mentions its an option for custom rendering. I initially built the app with the systed defined format and the GADNativeContentAdView, but the problem was, the default behavior kicks the user out of the app, which is not the experience we were hoping for. We wanted to build a native experience where ads are displayed and viewed in the app. Is that possible to do and still receive backfill ads? thanks again, this is really helping us

Hi there,

This is currently still in beta and you would have to contact your Technical Account Manager about this.

Thanks,
