I'm curious - what would you expect AdMob to say in a notification to
"large development houses" or "1+K$ per day" developers? Something
like, "Hey, we found a bug. It will effect your ad reporting and/or ad
revenue for hours or days. We don't know yet. And we're not telling
the others, so keep quiet about it..." ? That's supposed to be funny -
seriously, I'm at a loss as to what a "secret" update would be like.
I think their situation is not that different from ours, as
developers. They are being asked to add system enhancements while
fixing bugs. Suddenly, a "problem" occurs. It could be a website bug,
a network error, ad category problem, an error with a particular ad,
etc. They need time to figure it out before they just start changing
things. Once they have an answer, they build it and test it. If it
turns out that the "fix" doesn't fix it, then they start over. Or, the
"fix" might uncover other problems. Then they risk scope creep - do
they take time to fix the newly discovered problem?
Once a test is successful, they still have to put it out for all of us
and monitor it. In the mean time, we're anxious, they're anxious - and
most likely, we're all losing money (maybe only a little, maybe a
lot). I have yet to have a profitable bug in our software... maybe I'm
alone on that, and with their complex systems, maybe it happens. But
that sounds like bad business, and possibly fraudulent.
I just hope they put a system in place (maybe a Publisher "Known
Issues" section on the website, like Android Market; or a separate
forum), so we can report possible issues, they can announce/confirm
known issues, post progress/status reports and close issues when they
appear to be resolved. That's a lot of work... but it seems it would
help all of us.
