Does anyone know if you require export compliance registration when using AdMob in iOS apps?

I am currently looking to use AdMob within my next iOS app but I am curious to know whether when I submit I have to tick the box which asks if my app uses encryption? I noticed that AdMob uses App Transport Security (ATS) which my understanding of means that it makes calls via HTTPS. I know the regulations do have some exceptions, but I can't see that AdMob meets these criteria. I just wondered whether other developers had been required to register. I know this means sending yearly reports of all my apps which contain encryption, and I just wanted to be sure I wasn't wasting my time before going through the lengthy registration process.

Thank you for reaching out to us.

While I cannot directly comment on whether or not developers ticked the box to confirm encryption usage on their apps, I can at least confirm that the AdMob SDK is already using HTTPS for all inter-SDK calls (and is thus by extension, using encryption). However, I cannot assure the same for mediated ad networks; they might still be using HTTP for their ad serving capabilities.

In the meantime, I'll reach out to the rest of the team for their inputs on this concern and get back to you as soon as possible.

Any updates on this. I want to upload my ios app but got stuck with the ios compliance checklist. Too naive when it comes to laws and regulations around this.

Hi Amit,

Thank you for bringing this question to us about uploading an iOS app.

I would always recommend that you follow the iOS checklist and be as close to what they ask for just to make sure that you are not violating any policies they might have. As this would be an iOS issue and not something that we with. If there are concerns I would suggest bringing it to their attention.

As stated previously here, we are using HTTPS which is an encrypted system so we have worked to make sure that your data is protected. As for any mediation or 3rd party companies that you might be including. I would suggest that you contact them to make sure you are in compliance.

Also as far as the laws and regulations, I would suggest that you check each one separately. Beyond that we are unable to give any kind of legal advise regarding these. As we are here to help with the technical implementation of the SDK into your app.
