I have 2  apps that have been accepted as a Designed for Families app and one rejected.
But now the 2 apps accepted don't show the ads banner,interstitial, they make the request to ads (admob) but don't make the impression.
 This started to happen after the acceptance of the app's with Designed for Families option.

The rejected app make the impression of the requests the ads.

Does anybody knows about this issue?

Thx,
Francisco

Hi Ram,

Thx for your attention.

The APP Princesses Preschool Learning (com.itsimples.princesses.android )
has been accepted as a Designed for Families and now it doesn't Show any ads after that.

The same happened with app Baby Feed Animals (com.itsimples.babyanimals.android), but I made a test and disabled the option design for families in google play console and now it shows the ads again.

I realize that the problem is when the option design for families is enabled the ads don't show. But my ads respect the terms for being accepted in design for families.

How to mantain the design for families and show the ads in the APP?

THX,
Francisco

I'm sorry when you ask for provide you with adUnit what do you mean the code in the app with the request or adunit id?
If is the unit id code is safe to post that in the forum?

Hello Ram, I have exactly the same problem as Fransisco! My app was accepted as Designed for families and since then no ads are shown. The package name of my app is "gr.blogspot.feasyapps.animalsforkids" - Animals for Kids. Is there anything that can be done???

I would recommend sending the ad unit as private message to me. Private messages are available in the reply menu. I am able to replicate the problem both of you are having and am working with the serving team towards a solution/ fix.

Hello Ram, thank you for your quick reply and willingness. I have disabled the Designed for families option and the ads returned after a few hours. I do not intend to enable it, at least until the problem is solved. However if it is of any help to you I am willing to send you my adUnit Id as soon as I find how to send a private message to you!!!  :)   (In the More message actions I can't find any private message option!). Thanks again!

hello Ram,

I sent you the codes of ads units by mail that you have indicated, I do not know if you already have some feedback for me?

Since Friday that the app does not receive ads, tomorrow I will disable the option Designed for Families in google play  to enable the impressions on the app, however if you know anything let me know.

Thank you,
Francisco

Hi Francisco,

Yes, it is still Designed for Families.

I did nothing:
1. During some period it showed about zero requests impressions
2. From my test device I saw ads
3. After about 18 hours, requests went back to normal abruptly - seems (?) like (just a guess) a delay in presenting data

See https://support.google.com/admob/answer/6223431?hl=en

Here is the relevant quote from that link:

"Ads that are deemed as child- and family-friendly are a subset of the broader ads pool. If you show ads today, after opting-in to the Designed for Families program, you might notice fewer filled impressions and lower revenue. Additionally, apps that participate in the Designed for Families program can't be used to serve house ads through AdMob."

So it seems that if you opt-in to the "Designed for Family" program then you can expect to see significantly lower impressions and lower revenue.

The lower impressions is because most Advertisers probably have a way to indicate that they don't want their ads to target kids.

And for those that do then they don't need to bid as much, as there are less advertisers for that market. So lower impressions and lower bids means multiple hits to any revenue.

How did Google reject your app for the Designed for Families category? And did they give you a reason?

So you may think that it is a good idea to opt out of "Designed for Families". But it doesn't seem to be as simple as that.

2 days after the "Designed for Families" has come into effect I'm seeing big movements in the search results for key search terms for kids games. I'm seeing that those games which are in the "Designed for Families" are rising in the search rankings considerably. Sometimes as much as 200-300 places a day to come up in the top 10 or top 5 of key search terms.

I'm also finding that existing games which used to rank well for those search terms, but are not in the "Designed for Families" are falling each day. sometimes up to 5 places a day. And when you consider that only really the top 10 places matter for any search result (users probably dont scroll much further if they find good games in those 10) then this is a game changer.

So just something to consider. I'm not sure yet what the solution is. You want to rank high, but you also want to earn revenue from admob. But I think we must now choose between 1 of the two.

Thanks Alex, very helpfull information. But a very dificulty decision ?!?!

I this stage I think to active design for families. Because I don't have to many download's and the revenue's is not to much. And if I raise in rank better.

I receive AdRequest.ERROR_CODE_NO_FILL
Here is my question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/30748636/android-adrequest-returns-only-onadfailedtoload-adrequest-error-code-no-fill

We have the same problem. Zero ads impressions for all Designed for Families apps.
Admob support advise to try https://support.google.com/admob/answer/6223431?hl=en but it also didn't help.
Waiting for fix from Admob.

I think you'll find that there is no fix for this.

Perhaps some ads in the future maybe available for apps Designed for Families. But the majority won't be because, quite frankly, which advertisers would want to advertise to kids?

Kids have no money.

Also, even if there were ads aimed at kids, surely they would pay out much much less than those aimed at a higher age range.

So the long term solution is that if you want to earn ad revenue from your app then DO NOT include it in the Designed for Family section.

I added with settings: Family Category: Education, Age Group: Ages 5 & Under, Ages 6-8. Like result - "No fill from ad server." After that I changed settings "For all ages" and filling increased - now filling equals 5 adds every 100 requests. So, like temporary variant is not using Age Group: Ages 5 & Under, Ages 6-8.

I did suspect that the "all ages" range may increase fill... but just to confirm that you're saying you get a fill rate of 5%?

That's TERRIBLE!

It's what I thought. The fill is higher, but still terrible compared to not targeting families at all. And I don't see a reason why that will ever get better because the non-family category will always have access to all ad inventory, while the family categories will only ever have access to a subset of the ad inventory.

And that subset will probably be small because advertisers probably only want to advertise to adults (18+) who actually have money to spend!

"It really works! I changed to "Age Group: Mixed Audience" and now it has 99% fill rate." - here is answer  of man with same problem.

I think it depends on the country in which the application is downloaded. I do not have a large number of downloads, so I am not a good example.

You are welcome.
Do you have 100% fill rate? Or if you haven't 100% can you say me, how much?
Also I'm interesed how percents do you have in countries, like Russia, Ukraine?

Hi

I can't answer your question right now because only the version that I have uploaded today request ads. But when I have more data I will give my feedback.

I agree with Alex.

It's pretty obvious isn't it?

You can't. Not for the time being. And probably not for the short to medium future.

So if you want to show ads then get the heck out of the Designed for Families program. Period.

Hi, for those who succeeded to see ads through Designed For Families (Mixed Audience with high fill rate), can you please tell me if you used "is_designed_for_families" inside the bundle that's sent in the request?
Bundle extras = new Bundle();
extras.putBoolean("is_designed_for_families", true);
AdRequest adRequest = new AdRequest.Builder()
.addNetworkExtrasBundle(AdMobAdapter.class, extras)
.build();
