Ads not loading on streaming devices (e.g. 4th gen Chromecast with Google TV)

Hi

I have a Flutter app that runs on Android TVs. It is using google_mobile_ads Flutter package which uses Google Mobile Ads library internally.

This works on Android TVs (in Android studio emulators at least). But it does not work on streaming devices such as 4th gen Chromecast with Google TV. The ad does not load. I am not getting any error back.

According to google_mobile_ads package devs on GitHub, TV is not supported by the SDK, but I cannot find any documentation on what is supported. Also, it does seem to work on smart TV, just not on Chromecast like devices.

Does anyone know if this should work on Chromecast and similar devices, and if not, if there are plans to make this available. Seems crazy that Google does not want to advertise on its own Chromecast devices!

Thank you for contacting the Mobile Ads SDK support team.

According to the Mobile Ads SDK documentation, we support the following platforms: 

• Android
• iOS
• Unity
• C++
• Flutter

Since Chromecast implementation is not in the list of the supported platforms mentioned above , we will not be able to support the same.

Having said that , I will raise this as a feature  request in the Mobile Ads SDK. I cannot provide a scheduled timeline for the availability of this feature in the SDK.I would recommend you to please follow our release notes and blog post for further updates.

Hi

Chromecast is running Android 12. It comes with Google Play Store pre-installed and I have installed my Android app from the store, same as I do on the phone.

SDK documentation says that Android is supported, so it should run on this Android device. Perhaps the documentation needs to be updated to specify what types of Android devices are supported, but it would be a better outcome for everyone (devs, customers and Google) if this was made to work instead.

I guess that Chromecast and similar "streaming box" devices are very similar to smart TVs running Android, and ads do work on Android smart TVs. Chromecast is really like a smart TV with an external screen so not sure why it does not work.
