setAppMuted not always honored?

My app specifically requests ads without sound. I call MobileAds.setAppMuted(true) immediately after MobileAds.initialize() from the onCreate() method of the main activity.

This is a recent change I made. Before that my app only requested interstitials with video ads disabled in the ad unit settings.

Today I have received a negative review from a user who wrote that the ads began to have sound.

I don't use mediation so I know for sure that AdMob served the ads in question.

Could you please investigate this issue?

Hi Markus,

This might have been a creative issue on the said user's end. However, I tried displaying Video Ads on our end using our sample apps and I was not able to replicate the issue.

Are you able to replicate this issue locally when using our sample apps? Can you provide to us the following information (using the Reply Privately to Author option) for us to investigate this issue further?
  • The affected Ad Unit IDs
  • The SDK version you are using
  • Logs from Charles' Proxy with SSL Proxying enabled for when the issue occured. Refer to this article on how to properly set it up.

I'm a colleague of Joshua and I'll be helping you out with this issue here.

Thanks for sharing the requested information privately. I have tried displaying Video Ads on our end using our sample apps with the information from the code snippet and I was not able to replicate the issue on my device. However, I will share this with the rest of the team for investigation. If you are able to reproduce the issue, can you please send us a  Charles' Proxy with SSL Proxying enabled for when the issue occurred? If you can also add a video recording showing this issue, it would be really helpful for us to narrow down the issue.

Hi Markus,

Thanks for sharing the details. I've gathered some information from the team regarding this and team has confirmed that the setAppMuted method does not guarantee that the received video creative would honor the setting. Some creative can chose to ignore this, which in this case is considered as working as intended.

Is there any progress on this issue, and I have the same problem.
The ad network returns me video with sound which cannot be muted.
This don't makes sense of the availability of methods for controlling the sound (setAppMuted and setAppVolume).
Please give more priority for this issue.

I just wanted to make sure a solid fix was deployed before taking the risk of pissing my users off.

Hello, 

We are using version 17.2.1 released on 2019‑05‑21 and we are still experimenting this issue. Even if we set MobileAds.setAppMuted(true), some ads still play with sound. We have been able to reproduce it when an interactive mini game in particular was displayed.

All evidence I have at the moment is one very angry 1-star review but is it possible that this issue is back?

My app calls both MobileAds.setAppMuted(true) and MobileAds.setAppVolume(0f) to request silent ads.

I am going to reopen the issue which was filed previously. Could you please confirm that this is happening only on Android platform? Can you please share the Interstitial Ad unit Ids which are serving Video ads on your app? Also,  confirm us the current SDK version that you are using. Thanks for sharing the app link and the ad unit Id. I have downloaded the ad to test and reproduce the issue and have seen couple of ads and haven't seen any volume issues with the ads that was loaded with the app settings that you have provided in your app. Also, I tested your Ad unit Id with our samples and was not able to reproduce the issue as well. That said, this seems to be like an issue with the bad creatives that the users might have faced in some scenarios. As an option, you may use the Ad Review Center to review and block an ad or it is best to raise this to the Admob Help forum.

If you are able to provide us a creative with which we could reproduce the issue or any other details to try on our end, we would take it up with the rest of the team to investigate further.

I'm asking experiencing the same issue on ads with sound even I put mute or setvolume and I think this is only happening to a particular ads, maybe the ads developer put some trick when they create the ads, thanks.

I work along with Deepika. Thank you for additional context. This seems to be an ad creative issue, as you've mentioned that it only happens on a number of particular ads. That said, I'm afraid that ad creative issues are out of scope on our team. We would recommend contacting our Product Support team as they are more equipped in handling creative issues. 

In addition, if you could provide a Charles log (see instructions here) capturing the behavior, then I could take it up with the rest of the team for investigation.

Come on guys, this should not technically be possible! This is not about removing certain ads that have found a certain backdoor from the ad inventory, this is about closing that backdoor! That's engineering vs management, basically.

I was facing the same issue, and in my case, it was caused by MobileAds.getInitializationStatus() I was using to check if I need to call MobileAds.initialize or not. That was making the MobileAds.setAppMuted not work anymore.
