New fatal crash on ad display - Only fullscreen activities can request orientation

My app has been getting crash reports for months (through firebase crashlytics) of admob ads making the app crash. I don't understand how any ad should ever crash an app. The worse thing an ad should ever do is fail to load/display. It's rather ridiculous to crash the whole app. 

I am using com.google.android.gms:play-services-ads:17.1.2

A few of the stacktraces and device info are below. I believe all these traces are the same issue.

The team is still investigating on this but rest assured that we will keep you posted for any feedback. In the meantime, could you confirm if you are also using SDK version 17.0.0 same as Trevor?

I know that some of you mentioned that these crashes are happening in the wild and is not reproducible locally, however, if anyone can reproduce the issue consistently or reliably, then a reliable replication steps will really be helpful with the investigation.

I'm having the same problem. It seems to occur exclusively on Android 8.0 together with Samsung + Huawei devices (not sure if it happen on 8.0.X since we only see 8.0 in the Crashes-dashboard) on Google Play.

I somewhere saw a similar error and someone mentioning that adding:

<activity

    android:name="com.google.android.gms.ads.AdActivity"

    android:theme="@android:style/Theme.NoTitleBar.Fullscreen"

    tools:replace="android:theme"/>

To the AndroidManifest would solve the issue.

I got in contact with one user and sent him an APK to test it out, 1 week later and he still hasn't received a crash. Can this narrow down the problem for you guys?

Is there any update at all? Still getting lots of crashes from this. 

I don't understand how any ad should ever crash an app. The worse thing an ad should ever do is fail to load/display. It's rather ridiculous to crash the whole app. 

Is the admob team even working on this? Been an issue for 3 months at least. Has your team ever heard of surrounding things in try/catch to prevent crashes? 

In the meantime I shall try Rasmus's suggestion and see what happens.

This has been fixed by the team but we don't have an ETA on when this will be live. We will update you when we get any update about the release.

After updating to 18.0.0, I tried to publish the .apk on the Google Play Console. But there is a new permission that wasn't in the previous version of my app. The permission is "com.google.android.finsky.permission.BIND_GET_INSTALL_REFERRER_SERVICE".

I can't find much information about it. Please tell me if I have to add this permission in the Manifest, or request it somewhere.
I don't use Firebase btw.
