Large number of users saying App Open ads can't be closed / app freezes

We have an app which is on 'com.google.android.gms:play-services-ads:21.3.0' and has not been updated since January. The app receives decent volume of reviews per day and in the last 3-5 days many users have been complaining that the App Open ad is suddenly not able to be clicked out of. We have never had reports such as these in the past.

I am still trying to gather more information as I unable to reproduce the issue locally. Users say there is no way to exit the ad except by terminating the app. I have not noticed any increase in ANR's in this time period.

Could there be something in the backend that has made this problem arise for App Open ads?
