Hey Pierre,

Are you still seeing this issue? I just tested it out on a iPhone 6 simulator and test ads came back for me. Did you integrate the code below before you send out your request?

  request.testDevices =

      [NSArray arrayWithObjects:

          GAD_SIMULATOR_ID,

          nil];

Hi there,

I'm using the latest version of the SDK of the time of this writing (6.4.1 for iOS), and I've noticed that no test ads are being retrieved when using smart banner.
I'm testing on the simulator, and I've experienced this bug within my project as well as a sample project provided by the AdMob team. Everything is working well with any type of banner except for the smart ones...

Any clue what is going on?

Thanks,
PJ

Hey Pierre,

Do you have a sample that you can send me. I just tried on an iPad 6.1 simulator and an iPad 6.1 device and was able to get test ads back.

Are you just getting the same live ad showing up?

Weird, it does look like the message has been deleted. Can you possibly send the sample again. I've definitely tried it with a number of devices (iPhone 5, iPad3) and I'm getting back test ads for smart banner (as long as I used the ID that I get in the console).

Hey Raj,

any follow up on the sample code I gave you? I see the message with it has been deleted...

If you need any more information, please let me know. I tried to make the sample code as clear and simple as possible to be sure the problem is not lying in the code I produced.

Hi there.

I've been on vacation for the past 8 days, so I'm just resending the sample project now. I've just tested it on an iPad mini in addition to the simulator, and I still don't get test ads for smart banners. For any other kind of ad size (leaderboard, full banner, skyscrapper, ...) I do receive the proper test ad.

In the project I'm providing, you'll see 2 ad banners. The first one is a smart banner, and the second is a leaderboard. When the test devices array is not set properly, none of the ad banners get test ads. That is to be expected.
But then, when I provide the test devices with an array containing GAD_SIMULATOR_ID and/or my device ID (as provided by AdMob logs), my leaderboard banner gets test ads as expected but not my smart banner that is still getting live ads...

Could this have to do with some settings in my AdMob account? Or my location? (I'm located in France... could this have any impact on how ads are served?) Or whatever difference there is on the server side between serving a smart banner and another ad size?

I'm completely clueless on what I can possibly do wrong. If needed, I can send you screenshots of what I see when running the sample project on the simulator.

mmmh apparently this is due to the use of AdMob Mediation... I've just tested with the AdMob Unit ID (Publisher ID) instead of the Mediation ID I was using in both my app and my sample app, and I received (albeit ugly ^^) test ads!

Is this a limitation of Mediation, or a bug? I'm receiving test ads from iAd network when using Mediation though. So I'd expect the same from the AdMob network.

Are you using AdMob here through mediation? If you are, unfortunately Smart Banner ads do not receive test ads right now. However, this is a known issue and is being looked at by our engineers.

Yes, I do. I actually noticed this bug earlier today, and reported it on this thread but my post as yet to be moderated...

It is even more surprising that this is a bug since this feature is mentioned in the AdMob Quarterly Newsletter ("Support for receiving test ads when using AdMob through mediation") I received today.

Anyway, I now finally know where the problem lies. Thank you!

Do you know if a fix is coming soon?

Thanks for bringing up the newsletter issue. We'll try to correct that.

I'm currently seeing the same thing on the Android smartphones (screen size 720 x 1280). I'm adding the test device programmatically. If I change the format from SMART_BANNER to a regular BANNER, everything works normally.
