You may be opening your project via its .xcodeproj file, instead of its .xcworkspace file. Could you confirm if the same issue is occurring if you opened the .xcworkspace file of your project instead?

Thank you for providing an update on your concern.
In the main toolbar of your XCode, kindly go to Product -> Scheme -> Manage Schemes, and confirm if your Unity project is in there. You can click on Autocreate Schemes Now as well if your project is absent. Afterwards, select the proper Scheme in the main XCode window in order to get started with building and running that Scheme (see attached screenshot).
Alternatively, you can check out this StackOverflow thread on how to edit Schemes, in order to properly target your project for execution.
