I am using the APIDemo app to understand how smart ads work. On the ipad Air2 with multitasking capability, when I split the screen it will still display the 728x90 ad which gets clipped on both the sides since the window for the app is not as wide as the device; CGSizeFromGADSize reports the width as the width of the device - 768/1024 even when the window is smaller This sounds like a bug to me.

I expected it to use an adunit that will best fit into the new slot - e.g. there is a 320x50 available which it does not use. I sort of thought that is what smart banner ads would do - use the ad that best fits given the width and height available. Can anyone explain why this is not so

To address the problem when the view is smaller than the device width I use GADAdSizeFullWidthPortraitWithHeight(50) / GADAdSizeFullWidthLandscapeWithHeight(50) thinking that specifying the height would pull the 320x50 ad. It does not do that. It displays an admob text ad that gets clipped. So I am forced to use kGADAdSizeBanner which does not fill the full width.

Has anyone dealt with this issue

Thanks
Rahat

Hi there,

I was able to reproduce the issue using Smart Banners and splitting the screen on an iPad Air. I have shared this with the rest of the team and I will update you as soon as I have any further information.

Thanks,

Hi there,

My team has got back to me and this currently is a known issue. While the team is working on fixing this issue, it would not be part of our next release of the SDK. But we will be coming up with a few workarounds for this until a permanent fix is available.

Thanks,

Thanks for your promptness.

Wondering if you can still help me understand how this is supposed to work.

If I use GADAdSizeFullWidthPortraitWithHeight(90) on an ipad(not split) it will show the 728x90 ad.
If I use GADAdSizeFullWidthPortraitWithHeight(50) on an ipad(not split) it does not show the 320x50 in the demo app - shows the text ad

Is this the issue that u said you are aware of and will have a workaround? or are you talking about just the clipping when the screen is split?

I modified the DemoApp multiple banner sizes to use these to see this.

Thanks
Rahat

Hi there,

The issue that I was referring to was the clipping of the Banner Ads while using Split Screen on an iPad. Also If you use GADAdSizeFullWidthPortraitWithHeight(50), then the AdSize would be the full length of the device with the height being 50. If you want 320x50 AdSized Banner, then I would use kGADAdSizeBanner as your size.

Thanks Veer
Sorry I may not have been clear

If I use GADAdSizeFullWidthPortraitWithHeight(50) - ad width is the screen width and size is 50.
On the iPad --- The ad that it fills is a text ad
On the iPhone  --- You get a 320x50
My question why is there a difference based on the device? in the case of the ipad it does not use the 320x50.
I am trying to understand the logic of how the ads are picked when there can be multiple choices that can fit in the bannerView

THanks
Rahat

Hi there,

There are certainly variations based on the device screen size. You can go through our Banner Size considerations to get an understanding on how these are done. Coming to your point , if you use GADAdSizeFullWidthPortraitWithHeight(50) -
  • On an iPad, Banner ads are not limited to text ads. If you enable live ads, then you would be able to see different type of Banner ads.
  • Also, if you are using GADAdSizeFullWidthPortraitWithHeight then it would fill up the entire width of the device. If you want to show 320x50 Ad, then I would suggest you to use kGADAdSizeBanner.

Thanks for all your help and patience!

So to wrap this up. You are saying that if I specify a specific height like GADAdSizeFullWidthPortraitWithHeight(50)then I should be able to get live ads that fit in that size, if live ads are enabled - I guess by our publishers who set up the ads - correct?

Also - how will I find out about your workaround. In this forum?

Hi there,
  • If you were to use GADAdSizeFullWidthPortraitWithHeight, then you would receive Ads that are constrained to those dimensions.  The pubs would control the AdSize for their creatives and you would be served those creatives that would match the constraints of your Banner Ad Size.
  • As to the workaround, I would update you as soon as there is any information.

Veer Busani, I am having the same issue today. Did you ever come up with a fix for this issue?
