I am wondering if AdMob can be made to deliver ads only when the eCPM is above certain threshold.  I would rather not display ads when the eCPM is low.

AdMob eCPM floor beta serves this purpose. But if you are setting too much eCPM's, fill rate going to fall drastically. You can find it in new Ad Network in Edit mediation settings.

Best,
Kunal

Thank you for the prompt response, Kunal.

I noticed this feature of eCPM floor beta, but I cannot figure out how to make it the only ad source.  I cannot delete the default ad source: AdMob Network.
Right now, I have AdMob Network and AdMob eCPM Floor Beta.  My understanding is that if AdMob eCPM Floor Beta does not serve, AdMob Network will with lower eCPM.  It seems that  AdMob Network has to be there.

What I think is if you set the AdMob Network eCPM value higher than the eCPM floor value, mediation will try to fetch an ad firstly from AdMob network- if no ad is available ( with that high value). It will try with the eCPM floor. If no ad is available again, eCPM floor will leave that space empty.

I am not sure, this will work as I haven't given it a try. Its just the way, I think mediation works.

Do it at your own risk as setting eCPM floor value very high can cause huge downfall in fill-rates.

Thank you, Kunal.  I have configured AdMob as you suggested.  I will let you know if it works.

I do want to drop the fill rate.  I do not mind even if it drops to zero.  If the ad is not filled, the app displays a banner asking the user to upgrade it to the Pro version to remove ads and get more functions.

Hi Hong,

In this case, you could also implement a custom event to return this banner, and you can set the eCPM for this custom event higher than the AdMob only network to achieve this goal. There is also this similar example on how to create the banner and have it click through to the Google Paly store.

Thanks,
Eric

Thank you, Eric. I read the linked page a few times, but failed to figure out how to set up eCPM threshold. I am probably missing something fundamental.  I took a look at the document for AdRequest, and could not find methods such as setLocation used in the linked page.  I though there might be a method called seteCPM.  Any hint would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Hong,

There is no way to set eCPM on the AdRequest, but the idea would be to set "Optimize Ad Network" for the AdMob network on your ad unit, and then also add a new ad network with the "Custom Event" type that points to your custom event. The custom event's eCPM can be set to your threshold. Then for each ad request, if AdMob has an ad that can get you higher than that threshold, AdMob will serve over your custom event. Otherwise, your custom event will get invoked first and you can decide to show a custom "Upgrade" banner instead.

Thanks,
Eric
