Hello,

I seem to be having a problem with my iOS app generating ad requests from China/Asia

According to iTunes Connect, I have received 211 downloads from August 14-20, 206 of them being from Asia Pacific. However, according to Admob's geo map, not a single network request (or impression) has come from all of Asia. Other regions where I have received downloads are generating requests.

I've looked all over the internet for solutions to this problem, with no luck. From what I have found, Admob is not blocked in Asia, but it seems that other people are also experiencing this issue.

I've also noticed that the amount of players on the Game Center leaderboard is not going up (as much as it should be), even though downloads are steadily coming in. Could this be related somehow? Perhaps something to do with localization?

Any insight into what's going on or what the problem could be would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Can you share the Charles log with us to investigate the issue further? Meanwhile, I would also suggest that you contact our AdMob product Support team as this is a performance issue.

Hi Deepika,

I'm still new to app development, especially admob, so I don't know what the Charles log is and where/how I find it.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Tom

Hi Tom,

For the Charles Proxy log, you can follow these steps-
  • The first step is to set up the proxy between Charles and to the mobile device(the other device). In Charles, goto Help -> SSL Proxying -> Install Charles Root Certificate. Then Help -> SSL Proxying -> Install Charles Root Certificate on a Mobile Device. Follow the instructions there and make sure to install the certificate on the mobile device.
  • Next goto Proxy -> SSL Proxying Settings. Enable it and add Host: * and Port: * as wildcards.
  • Finally create a new session and make sure that you are recording. Launch your app and send me this recorded session.
You can also go through this page for more information about Charles Proxy.

Hi Deepika,

Thank you for the instructions.

When I recorded the session, the ad didn't show up, I'm assuming that's supposed to be that way? Normally the ad always shows so I'm hoping that isn't a problem.

I've attached the charles log, please let me know if you need me to provide any other information.

Hi Tom,

The Charles did not capture the session properly since you have not enabled SSL Proxying on your device. Make sure to follow the instructions as mentioned on their website and then send us the Charles log again, so that we can take it further.

Hey guys,

Are either of you seeing any of the players from China showing up on your Game Center leaderboards (assuming your app/game uses Game Center)?
According to the amount of downloads I'm getting, my leaderboard should have 700+ players on it, however there are only 30. I'm starting to think this might be related to my app not sending ad requests?

Just wanted to see if that's something only I'm experiencing or if it's a problem for you guys as well.

Thanks,
Tom

Hey Tom,

we also don't have any new players in our Game Center leaderboards from China. But I think this issue isn't related to the AdMob ad request problem we observe. Maybe the users from China just don't log into Game Center at all. But you can try to contact the Apple Developer Team if they have any idea on that.

Same issue here. In the last month I got more than 16,000 installs of my iOS apps from China and only 621 impressions from Admob and less than one USD revenue.

With all due respect Deepika: there´s a thread with this same issue:

that hasn´been clarified.

Ivan Bautista suggested as you do to contact the AdMob Product Support team but the ones who did it got the same reply already reported to you by Tom Weiland: "query has been routed to a wrong department".

It would be very appreciated by all of us to get some clarification on this issue as it is not a good feeling to see our installs going higher and higher and no corresponding revenues.

Best,

Hi Sandeep,

I believe those sessions are opt-in only (correct me if I'm wrong), meaning that not every download will translate into sessions...

I'm starting to think that maybe the Chinese have very high internet/data costs...and so they keep it off most of the time. This would explain why our apps aren't making ad requests, why we aren't seeing any sessions in iTunes connect, and why all those Chinese players aren't showing up on Game Center leaderboards.

Of course that's speculation, but it would explain all our problems.

Let me know your thoughts,
Tom

Hey Guys,

I run on two ad services, Admob and Chartboost. I have also been receiving a bunch of downloads from China. Both ad services have not been receiving a boost in impressions. So this is definitely not an Admob issue. I also have not been receiving the same amount of new players on Game Center. There is definitely something going on in China or with the App Store that we don't know about.

I really hate posting that I have the same issue, but I feel like this issue is not being handled appropriately and I am hoping that there is a critical mass that will get someone to notice the issue.

I have had over 1000 downloads of two apps in the last week and neither is showing any Asia Pacific impressions.  Even if this is not specific to AdMob I am very surprised that no one has shared a reason for it not working.

it is evident, China firewall in action and even Google cant help us much :(
From a some global platform data I see over 98% bounce rate from China, meaning China wall allow users load first page but just to see what was wanted and close the pipe. So it seems firewall ignores several kinds of calls and ignore/block advertisement with a special care...

So yes China loves our free apps as they enjoy them pure without a single AD 🤔

Best solution? Why App stores not allow us  make PAID download for selected Countries?

Other ideas?

Good Luck to our apps ✌️️

I really hate posting that I have the same issue, but I feel like this issue is not being handled appropriately and I am hoping that there is a critical mass that will get someone to notice the issue.

I have had over 1000 downloads of two apps in the last week and neither is showing any Asia Pacific impressions.  Even if this is not specific to AdMob I am very surprised that no one has shared a reason for it not working.

Hmm.  Well.  I have an in-app purchase to remove ads.  If I can't expect that the admit SDK to produce an add ... I would lean towards creating my own popup view or alert to annoy them just the same.  Maybe create my own ad asking them to support me buy purchasing the ad removal.  Even if that doesn't result in ad revenue from clicks ... I would hope it would convert some downloads to in-app purchases.

I think this will be what I do tonight and hope to have it in the app store by the weekend.

That is a good idea, however I really wanted to make a bit of money off my game without people actually spending anything on it.
I still find it extremely strange, as some people have reported getting some ad requests from Asia Pacific, although still far from how many there should be considering their downloads.

At this point I'm pretty frustrated (although not entirely sure with who...). I wish there was some way around this.

FYI:

In the last 30 days I had 23,000 installs of my iOS apps in China with 445 Admob impressions, 10 clicks and less than $1 US revenue.

So, there are impressions and clicks but the ratio between installs, impressions and clicks is quite far from what anyone would desire.

Best.

Hi Deepika,

do you already have any response from your team regarding the issue? It seems to be a general problem that lots of developers are confronted with.

Hi Waymon,

that's an interesting point that you're also getting only a few impressions with another ad provider. I've also thought about switching to another ad provider where it is possible to get ad impressions in China. Do you know any other ad provider that is generating more ad impressions in that country?

Regards
Jonas

Hi Pablo,

I am aware that some developers are getting impressions, however my app is not even sending a request for an ad from the Asia Pacific region (everywhere else works fine). No request, no ad shows up, no impressions, no revenue.
I am aware that I should not be expecting much revenue, however the fact that a couple of my friends playing once in a while generates more requests (and impressions) than almost 1000 people in about a month is concerning.

Right now I would be extremely happy if I could just get some requests sending from there, even if that produces extremely minor revenue. It simply bugs me that my downloads are going up, but not the amount of requests being sent.

Hi Tom,

Not all my iOS apps are getting impressions. I have one that had 1,300 installs in the last 30 day and 0 impressions in Admob from China.

Best.

Hi Pablo,

As I have only recently hit 1000 downloads in total, that makes me hopeful that my situation might improve.

I've the same issue and this is what Google answer to me:

Hi Marcello,

Thanks for reaching out!

That's right, I'm afraid.

Unless the customers are using VPN in China the signal won't come back to Google.

Let me know you have any more questions.

Yours,

Susan

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your patience. So, upon further investigation on this issue by our team we have found that there is no issue from the serving side and the following might be the cause of the issue-
  • Ad blockers could be preventing the requests entirely.
  • Unusual variants of Android or custom ROMs could be causing issues.
However, our team is still monitoring the issue and we are actively working on finding the root cause. We will keep you posted if we have any new information from the team regarding this issue.

2k downloads in a week, not a single admob impression and zero user sessions in iTunes Analytics.

China is enjoying Online & Offline Free Apps without any ads. :D

My company is experiencing the same issue.  We have thousands of downloads in China but not a single ad impression.
