How Admob will handle requests from apps without Consent SDK after 25th May?

Hello,

Consent SDK still isn't ready. We don't know when it will be ready.Probably many devs have many apps. Implementing Consent SDK will take time, we need to test apps, prepare new releases, upload to Google Play etc.

So, my question is - what happens if some of apps won't be updated with Consent SDK for 25th May? How Admob will handle requests from such apps from EU players?

Will it handle it in similar way to MoPub?
Quote from their GDPR FAQ ( https://www.mopub.com/resources/gdpr-faq/ ):

"

I
’m a publisher. What happens if I don’t update my apps to the new SDK?

To provide continuity of our services to our publisher partners and give your users sufficient time to update their apps to versions using our latest SDK, we will continue to support older versions of the SDK during a short transition period. During this time, older versions of the SDK will continue to collect personal data. However, in order to protect your users’ privacy, we will not store, use, or share such personal data, and we will only return contextual ads to your users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. After this transition period, we will stop returning ads to your app in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland until you update to the latest version of the SDK. We encourage you to update to the latest version as soon as it is released.

"

Admob should handle it same way. Or if it's impossible, at least give us option (in Admob console) to ignore such requests (don't display ads at all, don't store anything about players, etc).
This could give us opportunity to comply to GDPR while taking time to update all apps.

Hi Michal,

The AdMob SDK requires that publishers obtain consent before requesting ads. You can then pass in the "npa" extra with a value of "1" if you want to show non-personalized ads.

If you are requesting ads from AdMob without using the consent SDK, then we assume you have collected consent (assumes "npa" has a value of "0" - ie "npa" is not present, therefore AdMob shows personalized ads).If you have not collected consent, you should not request ads if the user is in the EU.

Regards

Sam

Correct, as per this article:

Although non-personalized ads don’t use cookies or mobile ad identifiers for ad targeting, they do still use cookies or mobile ad identifiers for frequency capping, aggregated ad reporting, and to combat fraud and abuse. Therefore, you must obtain consent to use cookies or mobile ad identifiers for those purposes where legally required, per the ePrivacy Directive in certain EEA countries.

The consent SDK provides the option to ask for consent to non-personalized ads on the consent dialog.

Sam

Is this consent will have yes/no option or only "ok" button? Like most website now informs about cookies.

I'm really excited if you are getting an answer, because, at least in Germany, this question is still unclear yet, 2 weeks before deadline! When so called experts don't know it, how should Google or we developers know it then. Satirical reality at its best. There is an article about this in German language. You can translate it by Google translate for example. (https://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/DSGVO-und-Telemedien-Cookies-und-Tracking-nur-noch-mit-expliziter-Einwilligung-4045908.html)

Hi Michal,

The consent dialog will be like an iOS action sheet with up to three options, Consent to Personalized, Consent to Non-personalized, or Choose ads-free.

The text for the three options is customizable by you.

Does ads-free means paid version? So if my game has no paid version, player will have only two options - Consent to Personalized, Consent to Non-personalized?

Also, canceling dialog means we can close app, right?

Which options you show is up to you. You do not have to show all 3 options.

From what I've seen, this will be like an alert, so there will be no cancel option, you can just leave the app.

The third option, if you show it, is totally up to you. You can implement it however you like, for example in-app purchase, point to premium version, etc.

If I use the Consent SDK should I then add extras.putString("npa", "1"); when showing non-personalized ads, or the consent will control this? I mean is this option is only if I use my own way to consent or it should be used even with the default consend dialog from the SDK? I hope you understand my question.

Hi,

I would recommend following the documentation in the guide for using the Consent SDK. Currently you are not required to pass the extra if you are using the consent SDK.

However, this may change with the release of the Consent SDK, so I would check the guide for updates when the SDK is released.
