What to eat in February, and when?

Hello! The list has been a bit quiet of late, so I'd like to start a
conversation about where to go for February's outing and when it
should be.

WHEN: How's 7:00 PM on Tuesday, 2/16 look for people? I picked Tuesday
because they tend not to be busy for most restaurants, but I'm not
married to the idea.

WHAT: Ah, this is a little more interesting. I looked at the flier
Leslie uploaded ( http://goodtastesf.googlegroups.com/web/BIGEAT2009.pdf
), and I'd like to propose Dosa, #64. The website is at http://www.dosasf.com/
if you'd like to get a closer look. I'm equally amenable to the
Valencia or Fillmore locations.

Thoughts?

Hope 2010's going well for everyone.

Another option...my flatmate and I have decided to host a dinner
sooner than planned, within the next week or two...more details
shortly.
I just re-posted the ad to Craigslist, here is what I came up with.
This should bring some interested new interest to the group.

Dinner sounds great. Tell me when and I'm definitely interested in sous chef duties. If there's a theme I'll think on some cool recipes.

WELL, for one thing I have this really great recipe for Moroccan
chicken, preserved lemons and all - you eat it without silverware,
using bread pieces as your utensil, Ethiopian style - that I got from
a friend in Portland and haven't made yet
But I may go for something less ambitious this first time
Vegetarian chili and corn bread
Salmon or some other kind of fish (my flatmate knows some good fish
recipes)
We have a vegetarian joining our household this month
I don't know yet...we're going through recipes to decide
If you have suggestions, we welcome them!
I suppose one theme could "spring is on the way"
or the Valentine's Day thing, if something useful could be done with
that (maybe not...)

I think my parents made something similar when I visited them for
Christmas. Tasty stuff.

The "less ambitious" menu looks good as well. Some friends of mine
turned me on to the idea of putting some Fritos in the bowl before
adding the chili--I think they said it was a Cincinnati thing, which
is a bit odd because I don't think any of them are from Cincinnati.
But anyway, it's tasty, especially with some good sharp cheddar grated
over the chili.

Some of my best-received recipes have been:

Burgers and oven fries
Beef stew
Beer cheese soup
French onion soup
Thai peanut chicken
Chocolate chip cookies
Lefse (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lefse )

I'm also happy to bring something new, or just a loaf of bread or a bottle.

Tony, looks like you're running this one--when looks good, where is
it, and what shall we bring? (Also, the Craigslist ad is great--what
kind of response have you gotten?)

I have just invited a new couple who responded to my ad. If they want
to join the first dinner at my flat, and if Adam and Leslie are in, it
brings the total to seven - a nice number I think for a first at-home.
Although we could still round that up to 8 if one more person wants to
join in.
I'm thinking we may be bold enough to set the dinner for this weekend
- Saturday or Sunday evening? Anyone have a preference?
Menu not finalized yet, but I can assure you it will be worth your
time.
I'm thinking if one person wants to come early to help prepare they
could arrive around 4pm, dinner served around 6 or 7pm.
Also, if anyone plays cards, I'm also interested in starting a little
Spades group. I love playing Spades. It's a fun card game because it's
a perfect mixture of luck AND shrewd thinking. Similar to Poker, I
suppose.
I love chess, too.
Anyway, I'm excited, and looking forward to this as the start of
something wonderful.
If this weekend doesn't work, we could wait until next week, too.

Oh god, I completely forgot it was Valentine's Day! Yeah, let's aim
for Saturday evening then?

I'm sorry I'm out for v-day duties this weekend as well. I hope you do
a night like this again. It sounds like so much fun!

Sorry you can't make it, Leslie...does any other FEMALE want to join
the group? Lol, otherwise a new member, Sara, may be representing her
gender alone. I'm sure it's all good, though. It looks like we're
going to be doing this on Saturday, 2/13, probably starting around
6pm! A group of 6-8 people. Adam, are you officially in? We haven't
finalized the menu yet, but I'll let you know soon, or you can be
surprised.

ALSO, if anyone is on Facebook, I am Tony K. LeTigre on there. I think
I'm going to start a Facebook group page for Good Taste tonight, so if
you want, hook up with me there.

Many blessings

I'm still in! Sorry for the late response; things at work have been
exploding for most of this week. Let me know what I should bring.
Thanks!

We have decided to postpone the dinner til next Saturday, partly
because more people will be able to attend, and partly because we have
SO many leftovers right now we need to eat up before we cook again (I
hate wasting food). I hope next Saturday will work for everyone. I
promise, it will be a fun time for all.

Ok, so we're scrubbing dinner on 2/13 and moving it to 2/20. Sounds great!

Any more word on what you want us to bring, when and where we should
show up, and what we're having for dinner?

I'll brainstorm folks to contact if we still need people--let me know.

Thanks!

Join the Good Taste group on Facebook! I posted the link in another
discussion thread on here. I posted the menu there. Most likely we'll
use it for Saturday the 20th - pasta primavera, garlic-cheese bread
(both of these are Greg specialties), plus I'm going to make a salad
and a special dessert: sour-cream apple pie, courtesy of my Mom's old
recipe. Anyone who wants to bring a bottle of wine or anything else
they feel may complement this meal is welcome to do so! And sorry
about the postponement but I think it'll be better this way.

Ahh, I hadn't joined the group yet. Looks good, and I agree about
postponing it to the 20th.
