I am very disappointed in hyde park animal hospital.  I have taken my dogs to them for 20 years.  they will not let me schedule an emergency visit for a dog without paying them $250.  BEFORE THEY WILL EVEN SCHEDULE HIM.
We never have owed them money.  But this is their new policy.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for another vet.

They started this policy in the last year or so :(

Hello, Anne Marie --

While I haven't experienced this particular new policy, I can't say it surprises me. Ever since Hyde Park Animal Clinic/Hospital was sold, everything (in my opinion/experience) took a marked turn for the worse, more impersonal, and less customer-friendly. The last straw was when our dog had a very painful condition that turned out to be an infection that needed antibiotics right away, and they offered me: 1) an appointment 10 days out, 2) the number for an emergency vet, and 3) zero empathy or effort to relay what was going on to the vet, to assess whether this could wait or not.

We switched to Pershing over on 51st, along the north side of the Whole Foods building, and have been very happy there. I know that some have mentioned that they find the vet there, Dr. Jewell, to be off-putting in some way, and they now leave Hyde Park for vet care. But again, we've been pleased with the care that our dog receives there and also with the customer experience.

I'm sorry you have had this experience; when you've been taking your pets there for so long, it's hard. This policy has been in place since last year, and it's common practice for regular vet practices now, who are not typically set up - in terms of staffing and equipment - for many emergencies. And Hyde Park Animal Hospital is very short-staffed right now, to where they have closed the 53rd Street location on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

It's hard to get walk-in appointments anywhere right now, but you can try Pershing Animal Hospital at 1515 E Hyde Park Blvd (773-288-8888); South Loop Animal Hospital at 773-753-5551; Metropolitan Vet also in South Loop at 312-583-1921.

But you may find that they all refer you to an emergency vet like MedVet, Premier, or the Veterinary Emergency Group. All are on the northside and of the three, VEG is the least expensive: (312) 757-5444
Good luck and I hope your pup is okay.

We like Pershing Animal Hospital for routine care. If it is something that can be managed in your home, Green Tara  is run by Dr. Cat Asbury, and she comes to your home with equipment. I know she can’t do everything but a number of our friends have used her and like her very much.

I second the rec for Kat Asbury (drkatvet...@gmail.com). If your dog needs x-rays or more advanced diagnostics, she can't accommodate that.

I didn’t realize Dr Asbury had her own practice. She is the daughter of Mimi Asbury, a lovely gracious woman I was proud to know for many years.

Here in Chicago the most responsive, reliable vet clinic we have experienced is the U of I Medical District Veterinary Clinic at 2242 W. Harrison.  It's a satellite clinic for the U of I vet school but your pet will not be treated by a student.  They are certified by AAHA, the American Animal Hospital Association which sets standards for veterinary practices (Hyde Park is not.).

Hi-
We had the go-around about a month ago on vets.
I switched from HP Animal Vet due to a variety of reasons, after having many years and many pets under their care.

Dr Jewell and Pershing Animal Hospital have been absolutely outstanding in every way for me and my dog. Estimates, follow up, empathy - very detail-oriented staff and the care and love from Dr Jewell and his team - can't say enough good things. Chose to go there for my pet's spaying recently and absolutely stellar outcome.

We are in the midst of a health care crisis with our elderly cat - could not get an appt under any circumstances anytime soon with Hyde Park Animal despite our 20+ year relationship with that outfit.  Could not get into Pershing until 1st week of August - Dr. Jewell is crushed with new patients they said.   Called a few other places that had been mentioned favorably here on GN, but no reasonably soon appts anywhere.   Dr. Asbury called me back on Sunday and it was a lovely, super helpful, and much appreciated call, but she told me to keep the appt I had managed to make with Companion Animal Hospital because they could do more diagnostic testing.   Went there today - it is on Chicago and Clark downtown and parking is paid street parking.  But I have to say that the vet and the staff made an excellent first impression.  There was no deposit in advance.    For those interested - 312.643.2901.     Hyde Park Animal suggested them to me when they told me they could not help.

In the long run, there are veterinarians and some future-veterinarians and some Good Neighbors ... who want to add into Hyde Park a new animal-hospital that features low-cost for those who cannot afford much emergency care.

The "secret ingredient" for this happening would be community interest and skill-at-organizing ... among other factors.

Yours,
          Sid

wow, not to mention at least ONE vet who can do OTHER animals that are common, like canaries and parakeets.   Hyde Park animal clinic used to have one or two vets who could deal with birds, turtles, hamsters.     But no one at any of these places you've all mentioned, for a long time.   It's why we with things like birds, etc, have to learn how to diagnose and treat our own little ones.  Stressful.   esp if you don't have a car.

My aged cat had an emergency while I was out of town and our cat caregiver took her (with my permission) to MedVet up north (3305 N. California Ave.), since Hyde Park Animal Clinic could not fit her in (and Dr. Williams, the only vet I would have had see her, was on vacation anyway).

For an acute (and finally fatal) emergency, MedVet was terrific. I dealt with "criticalists" who would not be handling routine appointments, I expect, but the level of communication and care was first-rate. Not cheap, but it was reassuring to feel that Mary Alice was getting thoughtful assessment and treatment and that I understood what was happening and what to expect.  I would certainly consider them for more routine care, though they are farther away and may be more expensive than others mentioned here.

This whole conversation is so sad. Prior to HP Animal Hospital, before Dr. Wake bought it, there was another vet who was famous for (infamous for?) mistreatment & mistakes... Then, for such a long time, we had a wonderful vet service. Now it seems that since Dr. Wake sold the business, HP animal clinic has gone downhill rather quickly, and everyone is scrambling to find other vet services elsewhere. I have had good experience w/the U of I clinic, and also strongly recommend Dr. Kat Asbury for non-emergency situations. She makes house calls, and can diagnose and will recommend other facilities if the situation requires some treatment she can't do at your home. I would call her first.

I wonder if Hyde Park has the "buying power" to recruit a vet. There are so many people who love their pets and would spend good money, and there is an amazing rescue culture here. It just seems like there should be a way to open a small clinic somewhere near HP if not in it that could serve the community in a mindful, loving way.

What would be needed? A storefront and some number of people willing to commit to a new vet, to give that person a foundation to work from. And then it's a matter of advertising, right?

I am 75% sure Dr Katrin Asbury would affiliate with such a "storefront".   There may not be as much "recruiting" needed as ... energy to organize such a "storefront".

Also, in discussions I had in the early spring, the "former gasoline station, now an empty lot" owned by The University of Chicago, at the southeast corner of 60th & Cottage Grove ... has already received positive comments from relevant people as an excellent potential site for such a "storefront" or for an actual animal hospital.

I suppose a committee that wants such a thing to happen, is a possible next step?

Yours,
          Sid, and Liddie
