Tohelp, we looked at five of the leading free registry cleaning tools to determine the best free registry cleaner available today. All the tools were tested on a single computer that had never undergone any form of registry cleaning. We used each of these free registry cleaner Windows 10 tools to scan the registry and checked how their results differed.

Some of these factors led us to opt against completing the installation for two registry cleaning tools that we had planned to test. In one case, the malware protection on our test machine discouraged us from continuing to the download page, as shown here:

CCleaner is one of the most popular system optimization tools for Windows operating systems today. It comes with multiple features, including a registry cleaner. It offers a custom installation option, as shown below, which is recommended.

It also lets you create a portable version of the application that you can run it from a USB stick, which enables you to clean the registries of multiple computers without the need to install it on each device.

The installation process for Wise Registry Cleaner is simple and concise. There is a custom installer option, but the only customizable feature is where to install the program. While the installer did not push and bloatware, the download page did forward me to a promotional page advertising other PC optimization products from the company.

While the Wise Registry Cleaner does include a couple of other features, it pretty much focuses on the registry. Like the other tools, it splits the registry settings into various categories. Unlike some of the others, however, you can get a short description of any category clicking it, as shown below. In order to schedule regular cleanings, you must upgrade to the Pro version.

Wise Registry Cleaner Pro offers a one-year paid license that includes premium support as well as the ability to schedule registry cleanings daily, weekly or monthly. It also provides restore point capabilities and support for more registry entries, along with a desktop shortcut so you can clean the registry by simply clicking an icon instead of having to open the program..

Once the installation is complete, the program launches into the scanning process automatically, which users may or may not like. This tool is truly designed for an international audience, with many language options. It also includes settings to automatically manage updates.

Glarysoft also offers an all-in-one PC optimization utility that performs additional maintenance services beyond registry repair. It includes the ability to clean up junk files, fix system errors, clear privacy records and optimize computer performance. You can purchase a portable version that supports up to 3 devices for one year.

Ashampoo Registry Cleaner is an easy-to-use tool that does an efficient job of managing registry problems. The install process was straightforward without any bloatware prompts. However, the installation process did force me to create an online account in order to register and activate the tool.

While tidying up your registry can sometimes be helpful, keep in mind that even one incorrect change to the registry can lead your operating system to the blue screen of death. Therefore, before you make any changes to your registry, be 100% sure of what you are changing, have current backups of your system and data, and track all the changes you make.

In fact, routinely tracking changes to your registry is a smart strategy. For example, one of the first steps malware often takes is to change registry startup keys. If you spot those changes quickly, you can take steps to block the malicious software before it does real damage to your systems and data.

Yes, they do. A registry cleaner scans the Windows registry for outdated, unused and potentially erroneous entries and provides a way to remove them. This can yield slight improvements in system startup and operation speeds, but the performance difference might be imperceptible.

While you can delve into the registry editor and attempt to clean entries manually, this approach is certainly not recommended. Not only is it a time-consuming task, but even a slight improper alteration to the registry can lead to system malfunctions. The best way to clean the Windows registry is by using a dedicated registry cleaner from a reputable vendor.

When deciding which registry cleaner to download and use, first consider what your actual needs are, as sometimes free platforms may only provide basic options, so if you need to use advanced tools you may find a paid platform is much more worthwhile. Additionally, free and budget software options can sometimes prove limited when it comes to the variety of tools available, while higher-end software can really cater for every need, so do ensure you have a good idea of which features you think you may require.

First, you need to understand that just about every single action that you take on your computer leaves a trail. Installing, uninstalling, and even just modifying programs can leave useless junk files cluttering your device. If not removed, these can cause a range of issues, including decreased performance and major errors.

Whether you're using a desktop or laptop, we take a close look at some of the best registry cleaners available for Windows. These programs are all designed to scan your computer, identify useless files, and help you remove them. This, in turn, will help improve long-term speed and performance.

Fortect can help you scan, repair, and optimize registry entries, leading to smoother system operation and faster response times. It can help identify issues such as PC freeze, error messages, a blue screen of death, and slow performance. Try Fortect today with this limited-time deal.

Fortect is a great all-arounder, and it starts with the ease of installation, which is in our experience really smooth. This extends to the user interface, which is modern and allows a quick full scan the moment you run the app for the first time. Once the initial scan is done, you can choose to fix all issues or individually decide which things you want the app to handle. It also enables you to conduct a comprehensive scan of your entire system, assessing the health status of your computer and identify all areas that require repair or replacement. Utilizing its cutting-edge operating system repair technology, Fortect compares your device's OS with a newer version to precisely pinpoint the components that need enhancement.

Fortect has a stand-out feature that identifies issues such as PC freeze, error messages, a blue screen of death, and even slow performance. It can even recognize abnormal hardware noise and top things off with malware protection in real-time. While it may sound as a perfect solution, the only drawback that we have seen is its pricing.

CCleaner is an excellent option for those looking for a basic free registry cleaner. According to the company website, the program has been downloaded more than 2.5 billion times, which clearly shows how popular it is.

One of the main reasons for this popularity is the broad selection of tools that comes with the free version. These include full registry scanning and optimization features, and the beginner-friendly Easy Clean mode is excellent for those with little tech experience.

Although most registry cleaners tend to be quite beginner-friendly and easy to use, AVG TuneUp stands out as being specifically targeted at tech newbies. It offers a suite of performance optimization tools, with noteworthy features including an automatic maintenance optimizer, recommendations for actions that you should be taking, and a secure file shredder.

To test for the best registry cleaners we first set up an account with the relevant software platform, whether as a download or as an online service. We then tested the service to see how the software could be used for different purposes and in different situations. The aim was to push each software platform to see how useful its basic tools were and also how easy it was to get to grips with any more advanced tools.

Registry Cleaners are known to be harmful to the system and should not be used for any reason there is. It's a known fact that using these programs can easily break a Windows installation, to the point where a complete reinstallation might be needed. Here's a few myths about using these programs, and why they are just plainly false.

Registry Cleaners were used back in the days by developers who were using a OLE-schema for their applications. They used these to clean the Registry after uninstalling their programs, just in case there was traces of it left behind that could affect a reinstallation. These were back in the Windows 95 and Windows 98 days and this practice isn't in effect anymore. Therefore, there's no reason for you to use such programs and quite a few to avoid them instead.

I'm an IT technician, and so are many helpers here, and we'll all tell you the same thing: we don't see the use of such software, they are completely worthless and can even be harmful in some situations. Staying away from them is the best thing to do.

Mark Russinovich (works with Microsoft, former Systernals - did things like Autoruns, Process Explorer, etc.) has also said to avoid registry cleaners. If you try to clean the registry you're worrying about a minuscule amount of data cleanup.

Sure, tools like Revo etc. can typically do that, but it's really unnecessary the vast majority of the time. What I myself will do on occasion is go through the HKLM and HKCU Software keys and look for entries from software/companies that I've removed from my computer which I don't intend to reinstall and delete those keys if found. They're typically the ones used for storing application-specific settings and data and usually contain the most entries that a piece of software might leave behind on your system. It does no harm to leave them there and it's not something I do too often, but it can be useful for tidying up if you go into the registry a lot to look for/modify a program's settings by hand (something I have to do on occasion, especially when some settings aren't included in the software's UI).
