    Konflikte um die Ausbeutung mineralischer Ressourcen haben im Niger und in den angrenzenden Ländern Mali und Burkina Faso ein hohes Eskalationspotenzial. Das EIRENE-Regionalprogramm im Bereich des Zivilen Friedensdienstes will in Zusammenarbeit mit lokalen Partnern zur Entwicklung eines positiven Friedens und der gewaltfreien Bearbeitung der Ressourcenkonflikte in Niger, Mali und Burkina Faso beitragen. Hierfür suchen wir für den Dienstsitz in Niamey/Niger möglichst bald eine Friedensfachkraft für gewaltfreie Konfliktbearbeitung um extraktive Rohstoffe
    zur Unterstützung der Länderteams in Burkina Faso, Mali und Niger sowie Betreuung eines EU-Projektes zum Goldabbau im Niger.
    Ihr Arbeitsgebiet umfasst folgende Aufgaben:
    • Organisation von Fortbildungen der MitarbeiterInnen der Partnerorganisationen und von EIRENE Sahel zum Thema nachhaltige und friedliche Nutzung extraktiver Rohstoffe
    • Mitarbeit bei der Weiterentwicklung der Strategien und Ansätze sowie Mitgestaltung des Wissensmanagements und PM&E des Programmbereichs
    • Unterstützung der Durchführung von Analysen, Recherchen und Dokumentationen zum Thema Konflikte um extraktive Rohstoffe und zivile Konfliktbearbeitung
    • Beratung der Partnerorganisationen bei Prozessen der Organisationsentwicklung
    • Förderung der Vernetzung der lokalen Partner des Programms mit anderen nationalen und internationalen Akteuren sowie Unterstützung der Lobbyarbeit in Europa
    Ihre Voraussetzungen hierfür sind:
    • Kenntnisse von Konflikten um extraktive Ressourcen (insbesondere Gold)  und internationale Praktiken im Bergbau
    • Kenntnisse und Arbeitserfahrungen in der Analyse von sozialen Konflikten, in der gewaltfreien Konflikttransformation sowie in Schlichtungs- und Mediationsprozessen
    • Erfahrungen in Organisationsberatung sowie Lobby- und Vernetzungsarbeit

    The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Regional Representative, West Africa to support research implementation and management through coordination of the regional programme and partnerships, raising resources and undertaking research. The Regional Representative will facilitate ILRI’s involvement in the region by identifying opportunities and developing partnerships, as well as facilitating implementation of research for development by ILRI and its partner teams.
    ILRI works to enhance the roles livestock play in sustainable food and nutrition security and reducing poverty in developing countries.  ILRI is a not-for-profit institution with a staff of about 700. ILRI is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research Consortium (CGIAR), a global research partnership of 15 centres working with many partners for a food-secure future. www.cgiar.org.
    ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa and other hubs in East, West and Southern Africa and South, East and Southeast Asia. ILRI leads the CGIAR Research Program (CRP) on Livestock and Fish, and contributes to seven other CGIAR CRPs. The position is one of four regional representatives, which focus on strengthening ILRI’s engagement, profile and contribution to the regional livestock research for development agenda. www.ilri.org
    Responsibilities:
    • Strategy development & implementation: Develop a strategy, in collaboration with Institute’s Management Committee, for West Africa that prioritizes ILRI livestock research activities in the region in relation to regional and national livestock research priorities.
    • Resource mobilization:  Play a significant and proactive role in raising resources for ILRI’s strategic priorities in the region.  These would align with ILRI’s overall priorities; its Africa regional priorities and those of the region with regard to the livestock sector.
    • External relations: Proactively build, establish and maintain effective relationships with ILRI partners in the region with emphasis on state and national governments, regional and international organizations and key development agencies that have been identified as priority stakeholders.
    • Research activities: In coordination with ILRI Program leaders and CRP focal points, facilitate the initiation and implementation of CGIAR Research Programme activities and other ILRI projects in the region. Depending on area of expertise, contribute directly to research outputs.
    • Communications: Develop in collaboration with the corporate communications team, a Communications and Knowledge Management Plan for the Region aimed at key stakeholder groups and guide and supervise local communications staff. Represent ILRI at national, regional and international fora to ensure that ILRI is engaged in developing the livestock agenda in the region.
    • Capacity development: Proactively facilitate capacity development of regional stakeholders, including graduate fellows, in national agricultural research institutes, universities, governments and the ILRI team itself to ensure development of priority livestock research activities and livestock policies that respond to local needs and contribute to development impacts, within the context of ILRI and CRP capacity development strategies. Ensure all capacity development activities are closely aligned with ILRI research priorities and play coordination and support role for Capacity development activities in West Africa.
    • Internal relations: Act as the central point of contact for the West African region and ensure the coordination of staff and activities in the various offices in the region. Facilitate strong linkages between ILRI HQ and staff in the region, ensuring that communication channels between the region and the wider ILRI are robust and open for all dimensions. This also involves acting as the main focal point for ILRI staff traveling to the region to undertake activities in West Africa.
    • People and budget management: In collaboration with the DDG and program leaders within a matrix organization structure, coordinate the efforts and performance of staff in the region to deliver on priority activities in the West Africa Strategy including representation, communication and capacity. Manage financial resources in accordance with approved budgets and other resources for the West Africa Regional Office, ensuring coherence between expenditure and desired outcomes.
    • Contribution to project and related activities: Contribute technical and other skills as appropriate to specific projects and other ILRI priority activities, including capacity building.
    Requirements:
    • An advanced degree in an agricultural discipline with a focus in livestock sciences and at least 10 years of experience post-PhD. The incumbent would be expected to contribute at least 50% of their time to research relevant to ILRI’s programs, and to play a lead role in coordinating the livestock CRP work in West Africa.
    • A broad range of technical and managerial skills and experience in the agricultural/livestock research and development arena, preferably in West Africa and in managing diverse projects spanning multi-disciplinary teams,  a mix of development and research partners, including financial management and investor engagement.
    • Demonstrated resource mobilization skills and an understanding of the context and priorities required to raise resources to deliver on ILRI’s strategic agenda.
    • Proven skills to lead, motivate and manage teams and to obtain positive results from working in diverse partnerships with national, regional and international institutions in research, extension, development and in public, private and civil society.
    • Work experience in the West Africa region and an understanding of the research for development landscape and how national governments and regional bodies work.
    • Ability to synthesize and assess regional development challenges and to articulate, implement and lead a livestock research for development strategy.
    • Ability to build partnerships across ILRI Programmes, CGIAR Research Programmes, and Research support units and across the organization.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and French to communicate to a broad and diverse audience.

    The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) seeks to recruit a Research Associate – Global Maize Program (GMP) Maize Seed Systems to support implementation of activities of the Drought Tolerant Maize for Africa Seed Scale (DTMASS) Project and providing technical support to in-country partners (private/public seed companies, NARS, NGOs) to achieve project outputs and outcomes. Under the CIMMYT DTMASS Project, provide timely and high-quality technical assistance to in-country maize seed production partners on best practices for DTM variety production (from breeding to post-certification mass production) to engender independent and sustainable local early generation seeds (EGS) and Certified DTM seed production. The staff will be member of CIMMYT at its Ethiopian office in Addis Ababa.
    General: The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is an autonomous, non-profit making, international scientific organization operating under the aegis of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). More specifically its mission is to encourage, support and undertake activities to improve the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of maize and wheat systems in the interest of the resource poor in developing countries.
    Main duties & responsibilities:
    • Under the direction of the Principle Investigator, implement technical support and capacity building efforts to in-country seed companies (public and private) on DTM seed production;
    • Assists multiplying initial pre-basic and basic seed to help private seed companies to quickly scale seed production of drought-tolerant maize varieties;
    • Assists and coordinates the production of Early Generation seed to meet the demands by private seed companies and other partners;
    • Provides technical support for the production of certified by seed companies and distribution in the target zones;
    • Supports other seed system specialists and scientists in engaging seed producers for the development of sustainable seed networks and markets;
    • Assists in developing and improving capacity of seed sector partners through training and other related capacity-building initiatives;
    • Assists and monitors variety demonstrations conducted by seed companies and NGOs to promote drought-tolerant maize varieties;
    • Ensures with the relevant bodies, the partner compliance with all relevant seed quality and production and storage standards as needed;
    • Supports seed company partners in timely and accurate recording of seed production Progress Reports, including the reporting of any challenges;
    • Provides logistical and technical support for any in-country training or workshops;
    • Assists CIMMYT staff and consultants in any business and marketing support efforts to in-country seed production partners;
    • Supports CIMMYT Communications staff in preparing materials for publication on DTMASS efforts and project success stories.
    Minimum Requirements and Desirable Skills:
    Education:
    • MSc in Plant Breeding , Seed Systems or related agricultural fields
    Experience:
    • At least 3 years of relevant experience in maize seed production, maize breeding, agronomy or related field.
    • Experience working with public and private seed sectors (NARES, private seed companies, extension workers, etc.)
    • Experience organizing and implementing Variety demonstrations, field days, other promotion activities
    • Experience in collecting DUS and VCU data
    • Experience in training or skills transfer
    Skills and Competencies:

    We are seeking an experienced, pro-active self-motivated and results-oriented Gender and Development Specialist to join our interdisciplinary team of scientists working to improve the livelihoods of resource-poor wheat and maize farmers in the developing world. As a member of the CIMMYT Gender Team under the Socio-Economics Program, and in close collaboration with other socioeconomic and biophysical scientists and international and national partners, the successful candidate will undertake applied research on gender issues in sustainable intensification of wheat and maize-based farming systems and contribute to strengthening the institutional capacity for integrating gender in wheat- and maize research-for-development.

    We are seeking an experienced, pro-active and results-oriented social scientist to develop and implement a strategic socio-economic research agenda around the adoption and impact of cereal innovations, particularly for maize seed in Africa. The position contributes to CIMMYT’s research-for-development (R4D) to improve the livelihoods of maize farmers and consumers in developing countries and the MAIZE consortium research program. You will work as a member of CIMMYT’s Socio-Economics Program in close collaboration with CIMMYT’s Global maize and other programs and with local and international partners.
    The position will be based at CIMMYT-Ethiopia office in Addis Ababa or CIMMYT-Kenya office in Nairobi, but will involve frequent travel, including to other CIMMYT field sites particularly throughout target areas in Africa. The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, known by its Spanish acronym, CIMMYT®, is a not-for-profit research and training organization with partners in over 100 countries.     Specific duties of this position include:
    • Assess the adoption of maize innovations in selected African geographies, particularly improved maize varieties in eastern Africa, including diffusion dynamics and associated drivers.
    • Assess the multidimensional (social, economic and environmental) impacts of such maize innovations, including their distributional effects especially on the livelihoods of resource poor farmers, consumers and women.
    • Translate findings into R4D priorities and implications, including the development of strategies, options and recommendations to set research priorities, guide policy decisions, facilitate adaptations and stimulate scaling up and out.
    • Strengthen the impact culture within CIMMYT, MAIZE and beyond through better articulation of impact pathways and ex post impact evaluation.
    • Publish findings in international peer reviewed journals.
    We are seeking candidates with the following qualification, skills and attitudes:
    • PhD in agricultural economics, development economics or a related social science field from a recognized institution.
    • At least 6 years of relevant experience in applied R4D in developing countries, preferably with experience in Africa.
    • Good partnership and interpersonal skills and team player, including ability to work with different nationalities, disciplines and educational levels, as a member of a diverse work team.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
    • A high degree of personal organization and the ability to multi-task and work under pressure, as well as travel extensively.
    • Established publication record in international peer-reviewed journals.
    The position is for an initial fixed-term contract of 3 years, after which further employment is subject to performance and the continued availability of funds.     We are seeking an experienced, pro-active and results-oriented Value Chain Specialist/Economist to develop and implement a strategic socio-economic research-for-development (R4D) agenda in South Asia. The selected candidate will work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to sustainably intensify cereal-based cropping systems and improve the livelihoods of cereal farmers and consumers in the densely populated and poverty stricken lower Gangetic plains (Bangladesh, eastern India). The Specialist/Economist will especially research opportunities for input and output value chain development –including service provision models for sustainable intensification options; wheat/maize value chain and marketing issues; and implications for technology adoption and -adaptation, scaling, and enhanced social inclusiveness.
    The selected candidate will be based at CIMMYT Dhaka Office, Bangladesh, but will travel frequently within country and to other regions where CIMMYT is involved in similar projects (India, Nepal, Africa and Mexico). You will work as a member of CIMMYT’s Socio-Economics Program in close collaboration with CIMMYT’s Sustainable Intensification and other programs and with local and international partners in relation to the Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (CSISA).     The main responsibilities of this position will be:
    • Assess input value chain development options for the sustainable intensification of cereal-based cropping systems in the lower Gangetic plains (Bangladesh, eastern India), including mechanization service provision models and public-private partnerships.
    • Assess wheat/maize value chain and marketing issues, and how to match the supply with the increasing demand for both quantity and specific qualities.
    • Assess implications of value chain development options for technology adoption, -adaptation, -scaling, and enhanced social inclusiveness.
    • Build an exciting research-for-development portfolio around the above three intervention areas, including for instance targeting options and tools; technological and institutional innovations; business models and development strategies; empirical evidence particularly in relation to adaptation, adoption and impact; practical recommendations and rigorous documentation.
    • Assist monitoring, evaluation and learning (ME&L) by providing advice on rapid monitoring, surveying, and interpretation of results.
    • Publish findings in international peer reviewed journals.
    • Assist in resource mobilization and project/CIMMYT-Bangladesh management as and when required.
    We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:
    • PhD in social sciences, e.g. agricultural economics, development economics, or a related field from a recognized institution.
    • At least 8 years of relevant experience in applied agricultural research-for-development in developing countries, preferably with experience in South Asia.
    • Good partnership and teamwork skills, and experience in leading research teams.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
    • A high degree of personal organization and the ability to multi-task and work under pressure, as well as travel extensively.
