Most essays take a vivid and telling image as their point of departure, but then range more widely. On the whole, the essays are provocative and richly suggestive, rather than exhaustive; and it is unlikely anyway, to my way of understanding, that the meanings and resonances inherent in a symbol can ever be fully enumerated. That is why they remain vital as symbols, able to intrigue, fascinate and transport.

The Book of Symbols illuminates how to move from the visual experience of a symbolic image in art, religion, life, or dreams to directly experiencing its personal and psychological resonance. The Book of Symbols sets new standards for thoughtful exploration of symbols and their meanings, and will appeal to a wide range of readers: artists, designers, dreamers and dream interpreters, psychotherapists, self-helpers, gamers, comic book readers, religious and spiritual searchers, writers, students, and anyone curious about the power of archetypal images.

However the Book of Symbols is a masterpiece of art history, philosophy, mysticism, psychology, anthropology, biology and spirituality. It brings together the history of various symbols, concepts and objects from many cultures and civilisations.

A primary method for making sense of the world is by interpreting its symbols. We decode meaning through images and, often without realizing, are swayed by the power of their attendant associations. A central proponent of this theory, iconic Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Gustaf Jung, made an academic case for it in the now-classic Man and His Symbols, and a much more personal case in The Red Book.

With a career spanning seven decades, Catalan-born Joan Miró (1893-1983) was a polymath giant of modern art, producing masterworks across painting, sculpture, art books, tapestry, and ceramics, and embracing ideologies as varied as Fauvism, Surrealism, Dada, Magic Realism, Cubism, and abstraction. Over the course of his prodigious output, Miró evolved constantly, seeking to eschew categorization and the approval of "bourgeois" art critics as much as he pursued his own dreamlike worlds. Emerging into the public spotlight in the early 1920s, he first experimented with Fauvism and Cubism before developing a distinctive style of symbols and pictograms, arranged in elusive visual narratives, with frequent reference to Catalan life. As his career progressed, Miró moved towards Surrealism, and, despite never fully identifying with the movement, emerged as one of its most celebrated practitioners with techniques including automated drawing, Lyrical Abstraction, and Color Field painting. In later years, he diversified his media further, working with ceramics, textiles, and even proposing sculptures made of gas. Through his vivid colors, dreamlike fantasies, and enigmatic symbols, this book brings together the numerous strands of Miró's kaleidoscopic oeuvre to introduce his fascinating career, its interaction with major modernist movements, and how it made him into a modernist legend.

Celtic heritage is full of interesting symbols, and in The Book of Celtic Symbols, Joules Taylor explains them all. This book is especially focused on the Druids who lived and breathed in ancient times. The Celtic Wheel of the Year, the significance of trees and mistletoe, ogham (the Celtic alphabet), and animal guides are just a few symbols analyzed in this book.

This highly unique dictionary of symbols is unusual. While most symbolism dictionaries draw on religion, art, and myth, to name a few sources, this book is the first to be based solely on symbols in literature. The dictionary contains close to 200 entries about symbolism in literature, including quotations and cross-references. Some of the symbols discussed in this book are swans, goats, roses, leaves, dust, the moon, and gold. Drawing on a range of literature, this dictionary examines famous books with symbolism.

Deduction by a computer studied so far has been centered around symbolic reasoning with formulas. Recently, attention has been directed to reasoning with diagrams as well, in order to augment the deficiency of reasoning with symbols only. In this paper, we propose a visual reasoning system called JVenn which attains a unique amalgamation of the diagrammatic reasoning and the symbolic reasoning, having perspicuity of diagrams and strictness of symbols complementarily. JVenn is unique particularly in the points that it has the strategy for proving a chain of syllogisms, allows for an interplay between diagrams and symbols, and guides reasoning with the beauty measure for diagrams.
