Patty Whitney is a native of Houma and resident of Thibodaux in southeastern
coastal Louisiana. She is a graduate of South Terrebonne High School and
Nicholls State University, majoring in Business Education with a minor in
English. She is the mother of three sons and the grandmother of two
grandsons.

After retiring as an Official Court Reporter in Division B of the 23rd
Judicial District Court of the State of Louisiana, Patty began working as an
organizer with Bayou Interfaith Shared Community Organizing (commonly known
as "BISCO") in Thibodaux, Louisiana. She has continued in her position
there and is currently the Executive Assistant to the Director and serves as
BISCO's "Environmental Advocacy Specialist" and grantwriter. BISCO uses
community organizing to address social justice issues in the Bayou Region of
coastal Louisiana and is prized as a trusted voice for the people in the
environmentally devastated region.

Patty has received numerous honors for her environmental and coastal
advocacy work and is a popular presenter on the subject around the country.
She is known for her humorous style and Cajun jokes, as well as explaining
complex theories and systems in simple and practical ways.

Patty is an avid genealogist and currently serves as the Director of Bayou
History Center, Inc., a newly formed nonprofit dedicated to the vision of
"Studying Yesterday to Understand Today and Improve Tomorrow." The BHC
Vision uses the study of family and community history to teach and develop
community dialogue on generational patterns of injustice in the Bayou
Region. She also serves as the current president of both the Terrebonne
Genealogical Society and the Lafourche Heritage Society. Her genealogy
specialty is the study and publishing of slave ancestry from along the
bayous of the state.
