The annual tarpon migration along the north central Gulf Coast is
approaching fast. During this years tarpon fishing season, we are requesting
that tarpon anglers get involved in the collection of tarpon DNA for research to
help in the conservation of this great fish. Especially here along the Alabama
and Mississippi Gulf Coasts, DNA sampling participation is desperately needed.
As reported by Florida Wildlife Conservation (FWC) and published in the March
issue of Saltwater Sportsman, DNA samples returned to FWC for research from 2011
to 2012 by state are as follows: FL – 6,606; GA – 89; LA – 79; TX – 55; NC – 5;
VA – 5; AL – 5 and MS – 3. As you can see, Alabama and Mississippi anglers need
to get more involved in this important research effort to support conservation
of this fishery.
The Southeastern Wildlife Conservation Group (SWCG) is heading up this
effort here along the AL / MS Gulf Coasts (in support of the research and
conservation efforts of the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust –
www.tarbone.org)
and is asking for angler participation. The DNA sampling process is very easy
and not harmful to the fish. You can watch a video on DNA sampling and the
process on YouTube at this link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzDwh5HcpJA. The SWCG
will distribute DNA Sampling Kits to anglers interested in participating in this
important research sampling effort. For more information or to request a DNA
sampling kit, please contact SWCG President, Mark Langner via email at
mark.l...@swcgroup.org.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
