I recently got a Comma.ai Panda OBDII adapter thing.  It shares information from the CAN bus in your car over bluetooth and makes it possible to capture data and explore a car's systems with Linux/etc.  I've only started to explore its capabilities.

Would anyone else be interested in a meeting with pizza and show-and-tell?  I'm sure others in this group have experimented with driving data and would have experiences to share.

How about Pyro's Pizza on Ridgeway, 6pm, Friday, October 6?  (Please suggest other times and places; I'm just throwing this out as a starting point.)

I have an OBDlink device, which has free android software but the device costs.

Not available for show and tell, however.

Very interested I've ordered a Macchina, it's a device that reads AND writes to the CAN bus.....much more capable than many of the cheap blue tooth dongles....There comms are not fast enough to record everything on the bus.

I use a Microchip CAN Analyzer right now to log CAN data with SocketCAN and it's utils on Linux. The Macchina looks really neat though!

Looks like very similiar device cept that the Macchina has its own CPU you can program.....to interact w the vehicle....What car/cars are you messing with? I'm a pro wrench and plan on using this to learn and hack diagnostic trouble codes, etc....Cant afford $3000 for a good scan tool but have a brain. I currently have a totaled 2006 Acura RSX that I plan to use for experimentation.

2012 Camry. No end goal right now, just learning what communicates with CAN in my car right now.

I'm in.  Trying to get educated on best OBD2 devices for my needs.  2008 Honda Pilot, and 2015 Accord Hybrid Touring.
For Pilot want to send messages from linux device to stock radio display.
For accord, want to grab vehicle speed from bus and display digitally on dashboard info display.  Strangely, this vehicle speedo is in 20MPH increments, 5MPH between closest lines.  I want an accurate digital display.
Also for accord, would like to explore changing settings to see if I can reconfigure for plug in option and larger battery available in Japan.

a macchina will do what you want as it has a Arduino CPU on board that can run whatever code you create. having it grab the speed data off the bus and drive a display should be relatively easy.

This thread lead my google fu down this path.

This guy James Pruett, or maybe Carter Davis Pruett is from Memphis, apparently hasn't quite given up yet.  https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/852179336/1153152894?ref=6muncb&token=2eec29c5

wikispeedia.org needs a bit of help to make their message more clear, but the concept is a worthy one.  FWIW, I have never met any of these people, just found the confluence of projects irresistible.

They are creating a database of the location of every speed limit sign.  They have developed a GPS aware OBD2 cruise control interface.  They've put it together with an Android car mirror as the host.  The purpose is so you can set your cruise control, and have it automatically adjust the setpoint to whatever the current local speedlimit is.

At least that is what is possible, I have not actually seen it put that succinctly in any of their material, which I think is at the root of their problems.  They are so focused on details that they neglected to tell the big picture story.

I've made contact and offered my support as detailed in the first link in this message.  I just wanted to see if any of you wanted to jump in as well.

My wife's car has adaptive cruise control, which uses front camera and radar with the hybrid regenerative brakes to maintain a minimum following distance to the car in front.  Combined with this project, I could get from A to B at maximum legal, safe speed with barely touching the pedals.  Much closer to DIY self driving car.

This idea is very interesting. Limitations are:
  • Creating a static speed limit map. My thought was to add RFID to speed limit signs, but there is not enough time for handshake when passing by ... Google thinks speed limits should be enforced through geolocation, which is better ...
  • Needing adaptive cruise control. Would there be a way around this for older cars, where the driver would actually drive but still stay within the speed limits?

Rick, Dustin,

I put one cruise-control thing out for sale on ebay.

If you want one, the reserve is at cost.
'Good way to get the box, wires, relays for cheap.
I can help you install it.

what do you mean Chris?
I am a new member.
Android Publisher.
Implementer of the first HA-UNIX system at FedEx.

I met two of your members and the only email I had was this, so I sent here.

BTW:
I also have at home the worlds fastest Unix booting system.
Q: Guess how long it took to go from power on to useable in its intended purpose?

I am consistently amazed how full of jerks this group is. Do you guys just get off on being completely uninviting?

You are invited. Now you can't say someone is uninviting. :P~

If an email is sent by an actual person with an interest in the list, and not just a hit-and-run, I'd not call it spam.

Scott,
Sounds like a Johnny Carson putdown he used to use when he didn't like the guest.
"Hey Johnny, guess how big a fish I caught fishing last weekend"

Johnny to the guest  "200 pounds?"

I should have elaborated, since I know routers boot linux and all.

My device was a mouse-driver pad. You would write on the pad, so
it had to have mouse drivers loaded, thats about it.

Anyway I still have it at home. Its for car use.  It booted in 5 seconds.

I had a console I built years ago with International Gaming Systems that I had built a custom version of Linux on.  Went from boot to playing the game in under 10 seconds.  Took me over a month to configure/compile everything down small enough, but it did work surprisingly.

Damn shame I couldn't have kept a copy.  Never had the energy to go through that again, though.  TinyX is your friend on embedded systems (or at least, was).
