I’m of two minds about this. On the one hand I’m happy that people still seem to think there is value in having a Linux user group.  On the other hand I would have preferred that a new mailing list and group had been formed rather than simply changing the name of the old one, if only for nostalgic reasons.

I’d like to attend a meetup sometime.

Hey again everyone - we had the first meetup, it seems to have gone pretty
well.

I've been given ownership of the mailing list to continue on with this, so
I've made a few changes.

It's now the Memphis Linux/Unix User Group mailing list, to more accurately
reflect what the group is/does. The mailing address is now
memph...@groups.google.com.

If anyone wants to present on something at a meetup, let me know - any sort
of interesting topic is welcome.

Thanks guys!

I attended / presented at a previous revival meeting several years back. My father died this past January and my mother moved to the Little Rock area... and I don't have any direct family left in Memphis now... so I probably won't be visiting anytime soon... but am glad to see some activity in that neck of the woods. We have several LUGs in Montana but it seems only the Bozeman one is showing signs of life and it is just limping along with a small number of hardcore regulars... of which I am one.

I would consider presenting something if your meeting location can do video conferencing over the Internet? I am fairly involved in the Fedora and CentOS communities... as well as with OpenVZ and KVM stuff... and continue to teach a SysAdmin class at Montana State University Bozeman's Gianforte School of Computing (yes, THAT Gianforte) every Spring... and am open to any related topic suggestions.

Regarding the mailing list change, just to clarify... subscribers don't need to do anything to remain on the list... aka the transition from previous list to current list doesn't require any action by subscribers? Does the club have a website?

Working on all of that right now - I'm currently in the middle of a move,
so things are a little more hectic than I care to admit, but it's all
in-process.

Regarding doing a video conference, I think that can be arranged somehow,
and could present an interesting challenge for us.

The sysadmin class you teach, is it Linux based? I'd actually be pretty
interested in what you teach about.

Thanks!

Working on what? A website? If so, cool. I use Drupal 8.

While there are some free programs / services / WebRTC-in-your-browser that can to a two person point-to-point fairly well but for more than two... I heard "Zoom" sponsor ads on my local NPR and they support Linux so I've been wanting to give them a try. One of our grad students has been using Zoom on Linux quite a bit.

I have to cover at least one OS and Linux is the only one I know well enough to teach. I have the bulk of my content as screencasts (which I record on Linux)... and each student gets a system container (running CentOS 6.x so they have access to SysVinit) and a KVM virtual machine (running CentOS 7 so they have access to systemd) that they are root of... where they can do their homework. I can email you directly the topic list if you are interested. I do refresh the content every year as things change... and change they do.

Jim,
Correct me if I am wrong.  Would it not be right at 19 years ago that we started GOLUM?

I did not sign up for this group.  Your actions abused standard list
management and is now basically spam.

Please return the group back to its orginal name.  Start a new group.

Thank you

Attached please find a copy the group by-laws passed by vote in 2011.  I don't have a copy of the signed copy passed by vote, but this was what was approved by the group in 2011.  The name of the group is part of the charter.
If someone is willing to step up and put forth the energy to give the organization some life, I'm all for it.
But I would humbly suggest that the way to do it is to amend the existing charter by vote if there is any desire for any sort of claim to continuity with the previous group, which admittedly withered on the vine.  Sorry, for some reason Google Drive converted the ODT doc to Word on download.

GOLUM Draft Constitution and Bylaws.odt.docx

I have tons of respect for the founders of GOLUM and especially Robinson Mitchell as he put in a ton of effort in trying to once again revive GOLUM to an active group. You all are true Memphis tech community pioneers.

I would warn against holding Harold, (Or anyone wanting to put any effort into any user group), to bylaws or group constraints that he wasn't there to help mold or have a voice in. It doesn't sound like Harold wants GOLUM, it sounds like Harold wants a general unix group to come together. (I'm not trying to put words into Harold's mouth, this is the impression I get after having several conversations with him and others.)

The attached Constitution and Bylaws don't account for group inactivity. IMHO Harold shouldn't be held to this document unless he truly wants to "Take over and revive GOLUM". That's a monumental task that has been tried and failed. I would rather see this new Unix centered group (that will obviously have a lot of cross pollination of Linux and MacOS, et al, users) without any burden. It's hard enough to start a technical group in Memphis even with all the advantages user group leaders have today in the #memtech community vs ~19 years ago when GOLUM started.

I believe I have these opinions because I saw a similar scenario when Thomas Langston left Memphis. Thomas was the Java User Group (JUG) leader and primary responsible party. Although JUG had a board and other officers when it came time for Thomas to leave no one wanted to step up and ultimately a non board member: Sean Lissner stepped up. Before this happened I had a conversation with Sean saying maybe it's better to let JUG lie and start a "not Microsoft Programming User Group", something more general focused because attendance and speakers were very scared for the JUG during this time. Sean took over JUG and had some success with it. Once he burned out no one wanted to continue the efforts and JUG has since been dormant.

IMHO Harold should have the support of GOLUM in his efforts. If GOLUM can present a current board and membership and that group wants to hold an official vote to refuse or grant the new group and group leader access to GOLUM resources (Mailing list) I would encourage those individuals to take that action. Otherwise I would assume silence is acquiescence.

List moderators performed the name change. So someone that managed this you *did indeed sign up for* performed the change. This does not constitute spam as you did not opt out of the list after the name change by unsubscribing.

I’m not trying to cause a mass revolt or unsubscribe, I’m just pointing out details.

Not so much a millennial trying to screw things up, more of a millennial trying to make something good happen and making some mistakes along the way.

Just so we're clear, the name change was never intended to offend anyone, nor to usurp the legacy of GOLUM, rather to serve as a pragmatic means of keeping continuity within the community.

Again, apologies to anyone I offended, as it was purely unintentional and I hope with what everyone can see as good intentions.

A new mailing list has been created for the Memphis Linux/Unix User Group: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/memphisunix

Thanks again, everyone!

I would personally rather have an active group with a different name than a dead group with the same name. GOLUM had it's time, and I literally owe my career to GOLUM, but if it's dead then it's dead. Take a picture of it and move on or step up and revive it.
