Hey again everyone - we had the first meetup, it seems to have gone pretty well.

I've been given ownership of the mailing list to continue on with this, so I've made a few changes.

It's now the Memphis Linux/Unix User Group mailing list, to more accurately reflect what the group is/does.  The mailing address is now memph...@groups.google.com.

If anyone wants to present on something at a meetup, let me know - any sort of interesting topic is welcome.

Thanks guys!
HMS

I attended / presented at a previous revival meeting several years back. My father died this past January and my mother moved to the Little Rock area... and I don't have any direct family left in Memphis now... so I probably won't be visiting anytime soon... but am glad to see some activity in that neck of the woods. We have several LUGs in Montana but it seems only the Bozeman one is showing signs of life and it is just limping along with a small number of hardcore regulars... of which I am one.

I would consider presenting something if your meeting location can do video conferencing over the Internet? I am fairly involved in the Fedora and CentOS communities... as well as with OpenVZ and KVM stuff... and continue to teach a SysAdmin class at Montana State University Bozeman's Gianforte School of Computing (yes, THAT Gianforte) every Spring... and am open to any related topic suggestions.

Regarding the mailing list change, just to clarify... subscribers don't need to do anything to remain on the list... aka the transition from previous list to current list doesn't require any action by subscribers? Does the club have a website?

TYL,

Working on all of that right now - I'm currently in the middle of a move, so things are a little more hectic than I care to admit, but it's all in-process.

Regarding doing a video conference, I think that can be arranged somehow, and could present an interesting challenge for us.

The sysadmin class you teach, is it Linux based?  I'd actually be pretty interested in what you teach about.

Thanks!

Working on what? A website? If so, cool. I use Drupal 8.

While there are some free programs / services / WebRTC-in-your-browser that can to a two person point-to-point fairly well but for more than two... I heard "Zoom" sponsor ads on my local NPR and they support Linux so I've been wanting to give them a try. One of our grad students has been using Zoom on Linux quite a bit.

I have to cover at least one OS and Linux is the only one I know well enough to teach. I have the bulk of my content as screencasts (which I record on Linux)... and each student gets a system container (running CentOS 6.x so they have access to SysVinit) and a KVM virtual machine (running CentOS 7 so they have access to systemd) that they are root of... where they can do their homework. I can email you directly the topic list if you are interested. I do refresh the content every year as things change... and change they do.
