EmbarcaderoCenter is a commercial complex of four office towers, two hotels, a shopping center with more than 125 stores, bars, and restaurants, and a fitness center on three levels located in San Francisco, California. There is an outdoor ice skating rink during winter months. Embarcadero Center sits on a 9.8-acre (4.0 ha) site largely bounded by Clay Street (to the north), Sacramento Street (to the south), Battery Street (to the west), and the Embarcadero (to the east), in the financial district of San Francisco.[1]

Developed by Trammell Crow, David Rockefeller and John Portman, construction began with Tower One in 1971, with the last off-complex extension, Embarcadero West, completed in 1989.[2] The two extension buildings are west of Battery.

The curvaceous ribbons, triangular in plan (1, center and right) are spaced about 1 inch apart, allowing glimpses of the core and its columns and beams beyond (2). Though each of the 230 undulant elements appears unique, there are only about 20 distinct shapes (1, left). Photo 2 Joe Fletcher

Now that a set of escalators has been removed, the lobby is newly visible within the retail podium (3). Black glass-paneled walls and a black terrazzo floor (4) in the zone beyond the security turnstiles provide a contrast to the lightness and delicacy of the GFRC ribbons. Photos Joe Fletcher

Although each of 230 ribbons appears unique, there are only about 20 distinct types. The shapes were developed with various computational tools and studied in virtual reality and with full-scale mockups. The architects and the local fabricator, Concreteworks, passed the digital files back and forth for refinement before molds were CNC-milled from rigid foam and then cast in GFRC.

This new visibility, the combination of darkness and light, and the contrast of rippling and orthogonal, represents more than a skillful resolution of functional challenges. At One Embarcadero, Gensler has created an entry sequence that is lively and gracious.

An informal survey found more than 92,000 square feet, a third of the complex, is either vacant or available, the San Francisco Business Times reported. The empty space includes the 16,000-square-foot Landmark Embarcadero Cinema, which closed in February after 26 years.

More than a dozen retailers, including Allen Edmonds, Gap, Ann Taylor, Loft and the San Francisco Giants dugout store, exited the center during the pandemic. Restaurants such as Kirimachi Ramen and Gochees Pizza have temporarily reduced their hours.

The center says 42 percent of its sales has been generated by downtown workers who vanished in the Covid era. Apart from December, foot traffic at the Embarcadero Center has been as much as 69 percent below pre-pandemic levels.
