IraiAnbu was born at Kattur village in Salem district on 16 June 1963. Born in a middle-class family, he wanted to live a well-intentioned life since his schooldays. His father's name is Venkatachalam and his Mother's name is Saroja. He has a brother named Thiruppugazh who is also an IAS Officer. He also has two sisters namely Paingili and Insuvai. The former is a College Professor whereas, the latter is a writer and English Professor.[4]
Irai Anbu has been a motivational speaker and hosted a show named Kalloori Kaalangal in DD Pothigai[6] in which he shared his experiences about his college life. He has written more than 150 books.[7]
CHENNAI: V Irai Anbu, a strict disciplinarian and an officer known for his integrity and a multi-faceted personality, is retiring as the chief secretary of the state on Friday. After his retirement, he is expected to devote the best of his time to writing and motivational speaking. Whether the DMK government will retain him in an honorary position suitable for his stature is yet to be known.
Born on September 16, 1963, in Salem district, Irai Anbu holds multiple degrees and doctorates in the fields of agriculture, literature, psychology, administration etc. Self-confidence, willpower and untiring work have been the guideposts of his life. When he took the civil services examination for the first time in the 1980s, he could get a comparatively lower rank. But he bettered his performance, analysed the areas where he could do more and on the second attempt, he got 15th place at the national level. His elder brother V Thiruppugazh was also an IAS officer who is known for his significant works in Gujarat.
Irai Anbu was at the helm of affairs when the Covid pandemic was at its peak. After becoming the chief secretary, Irai Anbu directed the School Education Department not to buy the books written by him for the government libraries until he continues in the present position and directed the government officials not to present his books during government functions.
He was instrumental in banning the practice of beating Thandora and directed collectors to take action against those who defy the ban. The Thandora practice was opposed by social activists for a long time. Irai Anbu also directed all district collectors to avoid any caste discrimination while representatives of local bodies hoisted the National Flag during the ensuing Independence Day celebrations.
Irai Anbu, a 1988 batch of IAS officer started his career as the deputy collector in Nagapattinam district in 1990. Since then, he has held many significant positions in various departments covering economics and statistics, pollution control board, environment, tourism, etc. He served as the special officer for the World Tamil Conference in Thanjavur in 1995. During his tenure as a collector of the Kancheepuram district, he organised moonlight schools for children who worked in silk looms. Besides, he took an active part in ending child labour.
Irai Anbu has conducted the Kalloori Kaalangal programme (College days) on the Podhigai channel which ran into many hundred episodes and attracted the youth. So, far he has authored more than 160 books on various genres. More than 50 students have done research on the books written by Irai Anbu and got doctorates.
Published in 2018, Moolaikkul Sutrula a 648-page book that details the functioning of the human brain was shortlisted for a prize awarded by Tamil development department for best Tamil books published in a calendar year.
The book was shortlisted for the prize (for 2018) in February 2021 by a committee of Tamil scholars constituted by the department, which has planned to hold the prize distribution ceremony very shortly. Meanwhile, in his April 28 dated letter to Tamil development department secretary Mahesan Kasirajan, the Chief Secretary has thanked the department for shortlisting his book and advised the organisers to avoid the prize for his literary work.
Iraianbu has authored many books, including Ezhavathu Arivu, Simmasana Secret, Padippathu Sugame and Unnai Arindhal. Significantly, this is not the first instance when Iraianbu has taken a moral high ground in public policymaking since assuming the office of the Chief Secretary.

Joint commissioners of municipal administration, director of information and public relations, district collector of Kanchipuram, additional secretary of CM secretariat, secretary of information and tourism department, etc. are some of the major administrative posts held by him.
A keen student of human psychology, he is an admirable judge of people, which is a hallmark of a good writer. When he was the Additional Governor of the Southern District, he adopted the village of Mudaliarkuppam in Villupuram District when the village was affected by the tsunami. He reorganized the village with the help of the Mysore Citizens Forum and built large houses for everyone at a cost of Rs. 4.5 Crores. He has participated in more than 2000 meetings and made students aware of their social responsibilities. He has given great advice to the students by speaking at the motivational meetings organized by many popular journals. Kumutham Weekly Magazine performed a program in 20 colleges to carve out students through his inspiring speeches. He has donated a lot of books to schools and village libraries. His book IAS THERVUM ANUGUMURAIYUM ( IAS EXAMINATION AND ITS APPROACH) has inspired and helped many students to perceive civil service examination.
He has hosted 500 programs on package television entitled `College Times', each running 30 minutes. It appealed not only to the youth but to all walks of life. The show aired 5 days a week and was enjoyed by Tamil people all over the world. More than 100 successful civil servants have personally consulted with him and he constantly gives advice to those who come to meet him with various problems. With the help of the Annamalai University Alumni Association, he has been holding special meetings for auto drivers to reform their behavior and stay away from bad habits like alcohol. He has paid the franchise for his books to the Moonlight Schools and the Adyar Cancer Hospital. Similarly, he has also donated money from his savings during Mysore floods. He has donated Rs. 2 Lakhs for the 2017 Literary Award presented by Dinathandi to set up a water purification system in a student hostel run by the Adithravidar Welfare Department in Mylapore.
He encouraged voluntary donations, implemented many projects through them and played an important in the complete education campaigns. He was fully involved in the early stages of the Enlightenment movement. Seminars were held to highlight the importance of the biogas industry. Large-scale smokeless stoves were introduced in rural areas. Villages that switched to fully smokeless stoves were declared `smokeless villages'. He was the coordinator of all the committees convened for the World Tamil Conference held in Tanjore from January 1 to 5, 1995 and was a great success. Under his Guidance the 1000th anniversary celebration of the great temple of Tanjore was organized. His role in creating the Farmers Market (Uzhavar Sandhai) is highly notable. SHGs have been set up on a large scale under the UBSP in many municipalities in association with UNICEF and he organized several workshops to strengthen the project. While in office he introduced a special literary flower, a weekly poster magazine and arranged for government news to broadcast on satellite television. He issued identity cards to weekly journalists to create transparency in management.
As District Collector, he worked hard to eliminate child labor, in loom industry. The initiative was stepped up by conducting surprise checks and taking action against the culprits. He was instrumental in setting up farmer markets, implementing the Animal Husbandry Scheme, strengthening microfinance facilities and accelerating the toy scheme. He introduced books as return gifts to important guests instead of wearing shawls while at work and implemented the practice of sending newsletters to the press via e-mail.
Dr. V. Iraianbu is a model bureaucrat who retained his optimism, exemplified dedication and commitment. During his tenure he has received 8 National Awards, 1 International Award and 9 Private Awards. He is not afraid to speak the truth and narrate incidents as they occurred. He also shows tremendous courage in standing up for an honest IAS officer and has the spirit with which an IAS officer should work. Young officers in the service would need to introspect to see whether similar motivation drives their action. Every person should try and inculcate the attitude towards the job if he/she wants to make a difference to society. He has constantly been on the guard against getting fettered by the bureaucratic routine or obsession with power. With innate sensitive, creative impulse and spiritual orientation, he has converted his life into a voyage of discovery. He is Indeed a superhero without a cape.
