Jim Hagy has been interested in conjuring history for more than 55 years. He has written extensively about 19 th and early 20 th century performers, including biographies of Henry Evanion, James Savren, William Henry Young, and Edwin Dearn. He is most recently the co-author (with his spouse, Sage) of Fair Tricks: The Magicians at the Columbian Exposition, Chicago 1893. He has also been the editor and publisher of Perennial Mystics and its predecessor publications for collectors and is a Member of the Inner Magic Circle (London). In real life, he is Distinguished Lecturer in Residence at Loyola University Chicago and founder and director of The Rooftops Project for the international charitable sector.
It was a landmark in the recorded history of conjuring, representing the most detailed work on the subject at the time (and possibly even now) covering magic in England and Europe up until the early 1900's.[1]
At the conclusion of his work, Clarke acknowledged the help from John Nevil Maskelyne, Angelo J. Lewis (Professor Hoffmann), Harry Houdini, and Adolphe Blind, all who had died before the serial work in The Magic Wand was completed. He also thanked David Devant, George W. Hunter, and Sidney Oldridge for their assistance.
At the beginning of his project, he furnished references to some sections of his text, but by and large he did not adopt any academic procedure. Most likely because he was writing for a magazine catering to the general interests of magicians.
The original intention had been to publish the work as a book as seen by advertisements in The Magic Wand starting in 1919. When only a few people expressed interest, he abandoned thoughts of publishing it in book form. George Johnson, editor of The Magic Wand, did serialized it years later.
It is also known that the original intention had been to include a bibliography in The Annals. However, the decision was made to issue it as a separate entity as The Bibliography of Conjuring and Kindred Arts. It was compiled by with friend Adolphe Blind and published by George Johnson in 1920.
N2 - Internet of Things (IoT) is recently attracting vendors like Google, Homey, and Samsung that have already brought to the market a plethora of devices and services supporting smart home automation. However, recent studies have shown that end-users having little knowledge of the features and possibilities of IoT devices, face difficulties in conjuring up meaningful use scenarios that combine such devices. Therefore, they fail to anticipate useful configurations beyond those provided by vendors and hence missing out on the vast potential of the IoT. We present an on-going investigation that explores the potential of sourcing IoT-relevant scenarios from a popular microtask-crowdsourcing platform, and a preliminary evaluation of such scenarios with respect to their originality and practicality. This work paves the way for the automated leverage of crowdsourced user scenarios to support IoT end-users.
