Aims and objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate the relationships of health literacy to chronic medical conditions and the functional health status among community-dwelling Korean older adults.

Background: In the literature, limited health literacy has been reported to have adverse effect on health outcomes. However, the link between health literacy to health status among Korean older adults needs to be clarified.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 103 community-dwelling Korean older adults was conducted from June 2007-September 2007. Health literacy was measured using the Korean Functional Health Literacy test and functional health status was measured using the subscales of the Medical Outcomes Study 12-item Short-Form Health Survey.

Results: Individuals with a low health literacy had significantly higher rates of arthritis and hypertension. After adjusting for age, education and income, older individuals with low health literacy had higher limitations in activity and lower subjective health. In a model adjusting for age and income only, older individuals with low health literacy were more likely to report lower levels of physical function and subjective health and higher levels of limitations in activity and pain.

Conclusions: Among community-dwelling Korean older adults, limited health literacy is associated independently with higher rates of chronic medical conditions and lower subjective health status.

Relevance to clinical practice: Nurses are key to providing health education to older adults. The understanding of the relationship of health literacy to health status is essential to develop communication and health education efforts for older adults in nursing practice.

The system is the principal means for a commander to apply an operational decision on how to protect against terrorism and facilitates coordination among DoD Components and support for antiterrorism activities. This system is defensive in nature but proactive enough to give the commander the flexibility to protect the DoD elements, personnel resources and interests.

(2) When an FPCON level is set, certain force protection measures are implemented. For example, if an Army garrison elevates to FPCON Charlie, you might see increased security measures at the gates, or even gate closures and the presence of additional security forces.

The Force Protection Condition level is posted at each gate entrance and all entrances to installation facilities. Additionally, FPCON levels are posted on this page. It is also recommended to sign up for the Alert! Notification System.

Make sure to contact your supervisor or unit leadership for guidance and to connect to the USFK Facebook page at www.facebook.com/myusfk and your local installation's social media pages.

HPCON Levels are now directly linked to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) COVID-19 Community Levels. Make sure to take the recommended actions based on your local installation's HPCON Level to protect your health and safety and that of your family and community.

U.S. Armed Forces members on assignment to Korea (permanent or temporary) must read and understand the following information concerning the Republic of Korea (ROK) Military Service and Nationality Laws. Members must also consider whether they have dependents that could be affected by the ROK Military Service Act.

1. Under the ROK Conscription Law, all male citizens of the ROK are obligated to serve at least 18 months in the ROK military. The conscription age under the current law is 18 to 35. The Korean government is enforcing this law upon U.S. citizens (including service members) who either hold U.S.-ROK dual citizenship or hold ROK citizenship with permanent resident status in the U.S. It is important to note, even if you are above the age of conscription, you may still face legal issues when entering the ROK until the age of 45.

3. A Korean citizen who emigrates to the U.S. and becomes a U.S. citizen through naturalization automatically loses the Korean citizenship under ROK law. Such a person has an affirmative duty to report the naturalization to a Korean Consulate or the Ministry of Justice to ensure that his or her name is deleted from the Family Census Register. Report process can be found here. It is important to note that failure to report loss of Korean nationality and deletion from the Family Register to ROK authorities may cause issues for individuals when entering the ROK.

4. If you are of Korean descent and are uncertain if you or your children may have ROK citizenship, we urge you to consult with the nearest Korean Embassy or Consulate regarding potential obligations before traveling to or entering the ROK for further guidance. Locations can be found here. Processing times may vary and official resolutions could take from three to eight months.

Family members of U.S. and non-U.S. military, civilian and contractor personnel whose normal place of duty is on an Army garrison or in an Army facility can also be registered in Alert!. To register, sponsors should add family member data on the Alert! self-registration page in the additional fields that have been provided. This is very important for family members that are also MWR employees as they are not usually provided a CAC.

Last month in The Interpreter, I argued that inter-Korean status quo is deeply persistent. US President Donald Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in have tried all sorts of tactics in the last 28 months to change things, yet nothing seems to work.

In 2017, Trump reached to the limits of coercive bargaining by threatening war against the North. For a few months there, it actually seemed like he might do it, unlike the many hollow threats of his predecessors. But the North did not back down.

By meaningful concessions, I mean movement on major political or strategic issues such as human rights, nuclear warheads, missiles, other weapons of mass destruction, and so on. Smaller give-aways, such as the return US Korean War MIAs or inter-Korean family reunions, grease the wheels but are not genuinely weighty concessions.

One obvious explanation begins at the individual or psychological level. Such explanations would evaluate the individual players competence, rationality, pre-existing prejudices, commitment to the issue at hand, and so on.

A second explanation would look at domestic politics. Perhaps Trump, Moon, and Kim are deeply committed to dealing but face bureaucratic resistance back home. Have they groomed a domestic coalition to support their effort for a major policy re-orientation toward a traditional enemy?

This likely does not apply to Kim. As an Orwellian tyrant, he can simply push aside opposition at home. And he has. This hypothesis does appear to work for the US and South Korea though. Neither Trump nor Moon has made much effort to groom a supportive domestic coalition.

You can access comprehensive legal-status data free of charge from the Korea Industrial Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS). For each IP right, KIPRIS offers a chronological list of all legal-status events, including post-grant ones such as fee-payment data or litigation information. Most legal-status events are also shown with an English translation. Furthermore, you can access the Korean patent register in KIPRIS for information on patent lapses, term extensions, transfers of rights, etc.

Thus, we deemed that perceptions of weight in relation to both under- and overestimation, as well as age, warrant study. Therefore, we aimed to examine self-perceptions of weight status among women according to age in a large, nationally representative sample in comparison to their actual BMI values, based on self-reported height and weight.

Anthropometric information was collected by self-reported height and weight data. BMI was calculated therefrom, and participants were categorized according to criteria for Asians [35] or generally applied definitions for the Korean population [5, 36, 37] using BMI cut offs of

Descriptive statistics of socio-demographic characteristics of the study participants according to age groups were compared using the chi-square test for contingency tables and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for continuous variables. A weighted Kappa coefficient was applied to assess the accuracy of perceptions of body weight: agreement between perceived weight status and actual BMI category. For each actual BMI decile, proportions of perceived weight statuses were calculated according to the age groups. Additionally, the proportions of correct estimation, underestimation, and overestimation according to age groups were also presented for each actual BMI category (underweight, normal, overweight, and obese). Multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to investigate whether individual age groups were associated with underestimation or overestimation and to explore factors independently associated with misperception of weight status. All P-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Analyses were performed using R software (version 3.2.2).
