Hi gardeners, here's the latest news.

Last Saturday morning we surpassed a 100 hour work day. (The combined effort of the 40+ people who showed up.) thank you!

Weather permitting, our next workday will be Tuesday April 12 from 5pm-7pm. Work will continue on the west side led by Katie. This will also be your chance to get involved with the Butterfly Garden. Susan S. will be leading winter cleanup in this area. And,

Susan S. will also be offering the first 15 minute installment of Gardening 101: Getting Started from 5pm - 5:15 pm.

From 6pm - 8pm the City of Golden is offering the water-wise class: Xeriscaping: Beyond the Basics. It is ok to work an hour and then head down to the Rec Center for this class.

Xeriscaping: Beyond the Basics. Tuesday, April 12th. 6:00pm-8:00pm City of Golden Community Center, Community Room. 1470 10th Street, Golden, CO 80401 Whether you are looking to replace a lot of high water-use grass or xeriscape some of your yard, this seminar will teach you how to transform non-functional areas of your landscapes into stunning areas that you can enjoy. And for those interested in reading more:

Membership - Suzanne & Brenda

  • Suzanne, who has spent a lot of time finding plots for everyone, was able to fill all the plots. (As well as a few perennial beds and even one space in David's permaculture plot.)
  • This year we have 64 regular plots (up 2 from last year as we turned last year's pumpkin patch into three plots, and changed two 10x10 plots into one 10x20)
  • We're running about 40% attrition every year, including from 2010 (Which is just about right as it allows a good number of new people to join every year, and a good base of gardeners to support the garden and new gardeners.)
  • Filling up on opening day was a first. (And we already have a waiting list.)
  • We'll have a first draft membership directory ready for you all to review soon.

Outreach & volunteer - ErikThe rec center adventure camp will plant the kids demo garden this year.

  • Theresa Worsham the sustainability director (and our staff liaison) will organize a group to plant and care for the pumpkin patch this year.
  • Jefferson Unitarian Church wants to volunteer at the garden during their Social Action Weekend May 14.15.
  • Outward Bound will bring a group to volunteer on April 16th.
Other news
  • We hope to get the labyrinth design laid out this spring (let us know if you want to help)
  • Diane Witters-Hicks will start contacting you to take pictures of our members.
  • John Spice, of the Lions club has volunteered his group to help build the raised beds for one of our senior gardeners.

thanks,

your garden crew
