Here's some news for the week.

Orchard planting postponed. (Due to the rain and mud.)

Saturday May 21 - two events starting at 9 am
  • 1 or 2 people to help represent the garden at the Greener Golden event in the lower parking lot, and/or give tours of the garden. We'll have a banner, laminated design of the garden, and flyers.  Reply to Matt....@gmail.com if you can help.
  • If it's not too muddy we'll try to fill the demo gardens, next to the pavilion with mulch, topsoil, & compost. Come by around 9 with work gloves, water, etc.
Also, Heirloom tomato plants, peppers, and other veggies and herbs grown by our friends at the Table Mountain Garden Club will be available this Saturday from 9:30am – 1pm at the Greener Golden Event. Some plants are free; others will be priced from 50 cents to $2.50 each.
Thursday May 26th from 5:30 pm "Happy hour" - Bring your favorite finger foods. Bring your own beverage, or look forward to some of the beverages that will be provided by other gardeners. Guitars, ukelele's,and other musical instruments of choice are welcome :).This will be a waste free event so please bring your own frosty mug and utensils. Watch the garden's facebook page for additional information.

For people contributing volunteer work hours on their own time: the mulched areas at the west end of the garden, specifically, the south side next to the fence, need to be weeded. There are weeding supplies (gloves, hand tools, and 5 gallon buckets) in the shed for everyone’s use. Weeds can be dumped in the ditch along the north fence.

The maintenance committee decided to attempt a combination of drainage and surface mitigation to improve the environment when excess rain falls on the garden.  The target date for implementation is the weekend of June 4. Here are the major components of the plan at this time :

Surface Mud mitigation
Cover the hills of the two main roads going up the hill into the plot area with a material such as road base to provide firm mud free thoroughfares. Also cover a 2-3 foot wide path along the South side of the North road on top to provide a firm mud free path for travel. Drainage Place a culvert at the bottom of the road coming down from the pavilion.  Develop swales along the North and South roads.  If the swales are not adequate trenching may be employed. These two major items should improve the overall environment greatly.  I have also experimented with grading of paths to reduce standing water in the corridors among the plots.  We think we can work with that concept to improve things further once the major elements have been addressed.
