Volunteers working on their own time:
Thank you for your efforts mulching the orchard soil berms! We still need 4 inches of mulch on all of the berms. Our remaining fruit trees were damaged in transit and will not be coming until next spring so the mulch can be raked out. Leave a little bare circle of dirt around the base of each pumpkin plant. Because of the rain, the soil is too soft to be stepped on - put mulch down, step on the mulch, put more mulch down, step on the mulch, etc.
The rains have helped the weeds as well as our new baby native grass. Our grass can’t compete and we need to remove the weeds before they set seed. Work from the edges of the front native grass areas, staying outside of the yellow tape, hand weed carefully, trying not to disturb the surrounding soil as much as possible. Once the perimeter is weeded, boards can be carefully laid to access weeds in the interior. Weed out everything that doesn’t look like a grass. Attached is a weed sheet.
The butterfly plants are ready for the west side of the butterfly garden. Pulling weeds out of this area would also help. thanks!

Water in the paths
People are noticing water in the paths, and coming into their plots. Some of this may be due to run off from plots (They can only handle about 10 minutes of watering at a time before they send the water down slope. (Water won't drain down into the impervious clay.)), and some may be leaks in the system.
If you want to help find out, please let us know and we'll organize a group to survey the garden and come up with solutions. (Which could include surface grading, raising paths, fixing leaks, and education on drip best practices.) Also, don't forget to mulch around those plants to keep the soil cool and moist.
Save the Date - Buffalo Bills Day Parade - Saturday, July 30, 2011 - Kemp (720) 261-0773 will be looking for people to participate this year. It's a fun time!
Our Thanks
Thanks to John Hicks and George Holland for setting up the labyrinth last Saturday, and also to all the people who helped mark the lines.
thanks!
