Hi All

I'm having some trouble importing my old .wko files created with WKO3. Searched this forum, but didn't seem to find anyone else with the same issue.. maybe I'm doing something wrong. This is the error that I get when trying to import:

The 3 offending old race files are attached.

The workaround that I have found is to export them to a TP account using device agent, and then use tapiriik to sync this to Garmin, and then to bulk export from Garmin using Peter Gardfjall's excellent script. So this means that TP online, device agent and WKO3 can all read the .wko file (so I know that it's not garbage). The problem with this is that:

  1. Its hacky.
  2. Device Agent does not upload ALL files (95% of them though)
  3. The files lose all their headers, codes and comments.. so 4 years of meticulous record keeping goes down the toilet.
  4. Some files do not get stored as their respective file type, so swims are loaded as bikes.
I have seen GC import other wko files before (presuming v.2..?). The device agent can also convert the files on my pc to .wko4. So the question: is anyone working on the capability to import .wko files from WKO#, or WKO4 files any time soon?

Ta,
Jean

Hi,

WKO4 support isn't planned. You should be able to export in the original format I believe.

WRT WKO3 files they should generally import ok, but there are issues importing non-Bike files. When I reverse engineered the binary file format I only had Bike files to examine (I collected over 5,000 examples). The file format is a secret and is never going to be published.

For files that we cannot import directly you will find loading via TP is as good as you can get. That the sport is lost and notes are lost and you will find some data series such as L/R balance are also lost is down to the rather basic data they export in their PWX file format. I raised this directly with Gear at TrainingPeaks and also via their ticketing system (I am a TP user) over a year ago. It is not being fixed.

It is no accident that the file format was developed as a secret. It is no accident that the file format is _still_ a secret. Developing a tool to export to other formats is not in their interests, so it hasn't ever been done. Fixing the PWX format is not in their interests, so it hasn't been done.

All I can say is look at them and ask why they have restricted what you can do with _your_ data, why TP loses information on export/download and why they have not fixed known problems.

Mark

PS: I'd recommend always always always keeping original files, you never know what the future holds.

Hey Mark

Thanks for the detailed response! And to think that we pay for the privilege? Yeah, I get it. Think I'm going to have to chalk this one up to the learning curve - I was young and dumb! Meh!

Tell me, with the advance functionality that you built into GC a little while ago (the 'search and edit bazooka' that you built), would there be a way to identify say all ride files with no HR or distance and change the type to swim (swims were recorded with a Polar and no HR belt)..? And then to assign a default pace to come up with an estimated distance (e.g. for swim files with no distance, multiply total time by avg. pace assumption = estimated distance). Similarly with Triscore..?

Worth a try., If I can.

The TP stripping data is one of the big reasons that I no longer 'sync with TP'.. none of the advanced metrics like GCT for running or L/R balance for rides. Rather I use a script to pull the .fit file direct from Garmin. Not using the data at this stage, but I want to have it so that one day, if I need it.. it will be there. It does make it a bit hacky though to have to copy workout descriptions, etc. back manually.. but this is just one of the reasons that I'm looking forward to workout planning in GC when it lands. NO MORE TP!

Ta,
Jean
