I've been training with power (PT) for 18 months or so, so I'm familiar with the terminology and methods for an FTP test on a fluid trainer, but I'm trying to wrap my head around doing the test on a computrainer. I'm used to controlling the CT in erg mode, but this seems backwards -- I set the CT to whatever wattage I think I'm going to do?

I've seen references to using the CT Coaching software, I'll look into that as well, but I was hoping there was a way to keep this in GC. I feel like I'm missing some fundamental concept in the operation of the CT, any instruction would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Graham

Hi Graham,

I've used a CT for FTP tests a few times this season. You are right
on being confused with the erg mode as that will attempt to keep your
power constant no matter your gear or cadence by varying the load.

You need to set up a flat course with a text editor - this is a
"course" file, (.CRS extension), not a "ergometer" file (.ERG
extension). See page 27 of the latest manual for more details on how
to do that (http://www.computrainer.com/html/manuals/CTCS2007.pdf).

I then do a set warmup and prep, and start my FTP. I use a PT with
Garmin to monitor my power - and just hit the "lap" button when the
test starts.

HTH,

Hi,

Thanks, that cleared things up!

Even easier than setting up a flat course was just to open training mode, select the CT, and choose "Manual Slope Mode" in Workout Library, then use the +/- keys on the key pad to set the slope to 0.5% (I found I was outspinning the CT with 0% slope). Then do 10 min easy warmup (to get your tire warmed up), press stop and run the calibration steps on the CT, start up again, and then do whatever protocol you're using to test FTP.

The key sequences:

STOP/Reset = Stop
F1 = new lap/interval
F2 = change display size
+/- = increase/decrease load/gradient in erg/slope mode
F3 = shift key or on its own it triggers a Calibration
F3 and + = fast forward through workout
F3 and -  = rewind back in workout
F3 and F1 = fast forward to next Lap marker

Graham,

I'm Using a CT with GC and I have the same question as you.  Once i choose my CT and "Manual Slope Mode" in the Workout Library, how do I change the slope?    Do I use the CT keypad?  And if so, how do I see what my current grade is?

Thanks

Thanks Mark.  Is the Target Power chart then become the Grade display?  Seems that way...

The chart shows slope/grade workouts in grey and ergo workouts in blue.
