Is there any way to configure a single athlete with multiple FTP
profiles to compensate for differences in FTP between riding on a
trainer versus riding outdoors? Anyone who spends time on a trainer
knows that your power numbers on the trainer are generally no where near
your power on the road[1]. The reason I ask is the only way can do that
currently is constantly change my athlete FTP power for each ride
depending on whether or not I do a trainer ride which is annoying. I do
enough trainer rides this time of year that if I do not update my FTP
when I do a trainer ride, my stress trends will be artificially low. Is
there a more sane way to do this? If not, any thoughts on adding
multiple FTP profiles for each athlete so that you can select the
appropriate FTP profile for each ride to correct all of metrics that are
based on FTP?

Thanks,

Wayne

This comes up from time to time here.  Usually in the NH winter :)

You can override CP and W' in the metadata for a ride if you believe that is valid.
So for an indoor training activity you could set CP a little lower than for an outdoor ride.

I'm not sure how valid that is.

RPE may be higher for athletes new to indoor training; insufficient cooling, inertial load due to lack of minor fluctuations, air flow into the lungs, biomechanical differences from bike position and changes in position as you ride etc

Higher RPE doesn't necessarily translate into higher physiological stress.

Would it work to use "Adjust Power" to increase the power numbers
artificially? Maybe that would give you the desired result too?

Thanks for the tip.

This may be true but my heart rate is fairly consistent in each power
zone during my outdoor testing. I tried performing a standard 20 minute
power test on my trainer and my results are around 25W less than my
outdoor test results yet my heart rate matches almost identically for
both tests. I understand that heart rate is variable but does it vary
that much between trainer versus outdoor testing. If nothing else, it
certainly is interesting.

I could try that as well but it would have to be appropriately scaled
depending on power zone. Mark's CP adjustment seems like an easier
solution.

Yes it is. Would be neat if we could start looking at this kind of thing and identify patterns etc.
We'll have to wait till v4.1 / 4.2 for that :)

Don't underestimate the impact of no wind and overheating !
