Did I just imagine that somebody had done this?  I've searched my archives of the list and can't find it.

You can use the workout creator to create a workout file using the currently selected ride.

Ah.  So, in my case I want to create a workout for an out-of-town road race where I won't have a chance to pre-ride any of the course at all.  The course is on mapmyride, so I exported as a GPX.

I guess in that case what I'd have to do is import the GPX as a fake workout and create a workout file from that selected ride.  I'll give that a shot.  Thanks!

Chris,

Were you able to do this? I'm a nerd. How did you do it? All I have is a .gpx of an upcoming race.

I can verify that it works to do it that way. I import it as a workout and give it am arbitrary date in the past so all of my fake workouts are grouped together.

I was, but it didn't really do what I wanted.

Instead, I used PerfProStudio on windows to create a workout and ride it.  That seemed to be a bit simpler to accomplish and, in this case, I was time-crunched and goal-oriented and couldn't respect "the journey" that sometimes accompanies using software slightly outside its intended mode.

The other thing I found useful to me, since I could not pre-ride the course, was to load the gpx file into http://www.brianfolts.com/driver/#origin=&destination=&advanced=on&fps=1&travelmode=BICYCLING&rn= so that I could "see" certain sections of the course which looked as if they might be pivotal, or simply to "landmark" the course. In my case the course was 100ish miles long, so I didn't do the whole thing, and I did it at a higher framerate than 1 FPS.

The street view in GC does what that link does, but you can also simulate the gradient if you are using a smart trainer.

I'm not sure what didn't work well for you, Chris, but I think the GC feature works really well. As with everything in GC, there is a learning curve.

Don't know. That was over a year ago. Perhaps the feature wasn't in the build I had?

It has been in there for a while, but I think overall it's just a little bit clunky to use.  (not a criticism, just the nature of such a feature-rich program)

So, maybe it would be helpful if I outline all of the steps.  You have to import the GPX as an activity (and I set them to a date of 1/1/01), then go to Tools>Create a new workout>Import selected activity.  Then make the CRS file from it, and use some smoothing of the gradients (trial and error there, and probably depends on the course and GPS data quality).  THEN, to load the file you have to 1) select the activity in the activities tab (this is where StreetView pulls from), 2) go to the train tab, 3) select the CRS file (this is where gradient data comes from), 3) Have a streetview player visible in your train view (as well as having all of your trainer stuff set up, of course).  If you have the Target Power telemetry visible, it will show you the current gradient (and will simulate on a smart trainer if properly set up).

Hope that helps. I think it's a neat feature.

WOW.

Thanks for the step-by-step tutorial.  I definitely didn't try all that.  Like I said, I was on a hard deadline schedule--confined to indoor training by weather on a borrowed computrainer, ridiculously aggressive work schedules and family life, with a looming race 700 miles away whose course I could not preview. I found the streetview site somewhat by accident, and was turned on to perfpro in response to a query to a few folks I knew who had experience with computrainer setups such as I'd borrowed.  I definitely opted for the "get it done" course of action.

However, with those details it sounds pretty cool.  Would be nice to refine the UI a bit so that it doesn't take so much.

Thanks for the tutorial... did not realise that step 1 was where the Street View was pulled from Activity... have gradient and static streetview picture as not connected to my trainer... will try tonight

Had a go tonight after configuring the train screen so I could see all I wanted... all worked but the refresh rate on google street view was very slow and it looks like a lot of frames are skipped as I cycle along.  Is there a config setting for street view.  My internet connection is good so dont think that is the issue.
Thanks
Mick

Not that I am aware of. Street view is jerky by nature, though. I do not think it skips frames for me, but it does look jerky. It is a better feature for course recon instead of a daily training thing. If you want super smooth simulations, then RLVs are the way to go. I have put instructions for this in another thread, just search for RLV.

I have used it for RLV but actually now TACX have got things sort of fixed I prefer the screen layout of TTS4 for that type of training.  I soecfically wanted the street view to re live some of my actual rides and some from my youth in Yorkshire.  I find GC very motivational and it has replaced my Polar software.  Just wish TACX included the altutude data in their exports....

As you are on line do you jnow if there is any difference in import formats as from TTS I have a few options but just use HRM files

Sorry, I don't know anything about that stuff. I'm not a developer, btw, just a quasi-long-time user.

Thanks Will.. only been using GC since Jan so still very much fumbling about .. although I have got quite a way already.  Managed to configure training screen and modify some charts.... dont understand most of the data / charts though ;)
