I wanted to be able to access GC from my desktop PC and a laptop. I thought i could do this by moving the athlete folder to Dropbox and have both devices access it. I moved the folder and tried to open GC, obviously it could not find the athlete folder and I could not get to the Options menu to change the location of where i had moved it to. I thought i could just move a copy back to it's original location, open GC and then point to the Dropbox location. After doing that, GC would crash or just freeze, I tried to create a temporary new athlete just get me back up and running. I have now got myself into a condition (not exactly sure how) where I get the screen in the attached file. Not sure how to get GC back up a running correctly. Any help would be truly appreciated.
II am running a snapshot build from January 9th. I think that is the correct date, cannot get to the screen to check. That was the last build that allowed me to get L/R pedal data from the Wahoo FIT file.

That is a not recommended or supported configuration. The alternative is to use Dropbox to sync athlete data.

The screen capture indicates your athlete library is looking for athletes folders where you have moved the folders of your athlete. That is, the folder named as your athlete is missing.

I have got myself really messed up. How do I recreate my athlete and associate my data with it? I do not see an option under athlete menu to add a new athlete or in the Tools/Options

I looked at the links you sent me and I do not have an option to add like it suggests

I have tried using the Command Line -- startup up option to bring up the "Choose an Athlete" dialog box. There is no option to select an athlete, see attached screen shot. I tried restoring this complete directory "C:\Users\alanb\AppData\Local\GoldenCheetah" from an auto PC backup that was performed last night before I created the problem, but that did not work. Not sure what I can try next. Can I create a new athlete and associate with the existing data?

I am sorry to keep bugging you, I know you are probably getting frustrated, I am extremely frustrated at the moment.
Best regards
Alan
Start with command line --.jpg

Yep, specially because I already explained you what the problem is and the solution is in the FAQs: you need to restore the backup under "C:\Users\alanb\AppData\Local\GoldenCheetah\your-athlete-name-or-whatever-you-want-to-appear-on-athlete’s-list" not directly under "C:\Users\alanb\AppData\Local\GoldenCheetah"

I am extremely frustrated at the moment.

To mess with settings you don’t fully understand it is not a great idea, in general.

I think you misunderstood what I did. Every directory and file under "C:\Users\alanb\AppData\Local\GoldenCheetah" is as it was before i created the problem, that includes the athlete directory "C:\Users\alanb\AppData\Local\GoldenCheetah\Alan".
When I start GC using GoldenCheetah.exe -- I do not get the option to select Alan as an athlete. I have tried creating a new athlete named Alan and checked the Athlete Library path is pointing to the correct location. That does not seem to work, GC activities show as being zero and the GC view looks to be the default view with non of my customization's.

You said  "To mess with settings you don’t fully understand it is not a great idea, in general." believe me I have learned my lesson.

I notice that when I create a new Athlete it creates it a level lower in the directory structure than I expect "C:\Users\alanb\AppData\Local\GoldenCheetah\Alan\Alan"

It seems like GC is looking one level too low in the directory structure for the Athlete. I assume that is why you see the activities, bak, calendar, config, downloads  etc. directories listed in the "Choose an Athlete" screenshot i sent earlier

Then athlete library setting is wrong in https://github.com/GoldenCheetah/GoldenCheetah/wiki/UG_Preferences_General, remove “Alan” from there

Where are you based? Thought you might be in Europe... was not expecting any reply this late at night.
