Hello,

I’m using a Garmin watch and would like to get the most detailed and comprehensive data possible into Garmin Connect (GC). I’m currently considering whether integrating Strava with GC would provide all the same metrics as syncing directly from my Garmin device.

Specifically, does Garmin send the full set of activity data to Strava (including advanced metrics like running dynamics, training load, etc.), or is only a partial dataset transferred? In other words, would importing activities from Strava into Garmin Connect result in any loss of detail compared to syncing directly from Garmin?

Would it be more accurate or complete to always import activities directly from Garmin instead of relying on Strava?

Thanks in advance for the clarification.

I use Polar, so can't help you.
Can't figure it out yourself? It should be fairly simple to figure it out. Simply sync / import your data from your watch and Strava and check your results.

See the FAQs, it is explained there.

No, I don’t use or recommend any of these downloaders.

You can setup auto-import in GoldenCheetah from any folder accesible from your PC as explained in https://github.com/GoldenCheetah/GoldenCheetah/wiki/UG_Preferences_Athlete#auto-import

Got it. My best bet is to export the activities manually from the garmin web portal , save them in a given directory and point the auto import to it. Quite a heavy task on a daily basis, thank you garmin! :)

Best regards
Patrick

For me Garmin download is a couple of clicks in a Web chart, I consider it part of my process of reviewing the training data and taking notes after each workout so I don't see this as an issue.

thank you garmin! :)

TBF Garmin has an official API, but it is intended for server-to-server connections and we don't have the resources to maintain such an infrastructure.

There are server based services s.t. Tapiriik using that API to sync to DropBox folders which can be used for GoldenCheetah auto-import, but this is not something I have experience with.

There are also a few python based libraries to download data from
garmin. You have to know your way around python to get them to work
though. It's not plug'n'play.

https://github.com/cyberjunky/python-garminconnect
https://github.com/pe-st/garmin-connect-export
https://github.com/matin/garth

I use a script based on python-garminconnect that fetches the activity
of the day and saves it to a folder that is set to auto import in
goldencheetah.

Back in the day I did implement a Garmin connection using their deprecated API but when I spoke with Garmin about it they told me to stop. They also indicated the service would be closed, but I'm not sure if it ever was, probably to support legacy devices. We were invited to use their server-server replication gratis, but as Ale has said we do not have the infra to support that.

Either way those github projects are your best bet

I think most scripts wouldn't work with the new Cloudflare integration from Garmin. The requests will have to be validated via a captcha which breaks most scripts.  The only bet is to use selenium or some other automation stuff which in my opinion is an overkill.
I will stick to the manual work Ale suggested. Cheers

We have an alternative now: the integration with https://www.tredict.com/ allows to sync FIT files, besides to download Body/HRV Measures and Workouts for Train view, see https://groups.google.com/g/golden-cheetah-users/c/_n9-ebzpD3c/m/X6u-mIZGAgAJ
