When attempting to download today's workout from my wife's Garmin 500
Golden Cheetah closed when I clicked "Import File" It has been working
perfectly for months and this is the first hiccup we have encountered.
Choosing to download from device, manually inputting, etc do not cause
a shut down.

Any ideas as to how to remedy the situation without losing data.

Thanks for any informed replies,

Hugh

Any chance you can share the file that causes the crash?

Mark,

GC shuts down even if the Garmin isn't attached to the computer it
isn't a matter of the file
causing the crash.
It just blips right out as if I've clicked the Close X at the top
right of the page.

Sorry Hugh,

Bit confused here. What action causes GC to crash? Your original post
mentions import file?

Cheers,
Mark

and can you also tell us what O/S this is on and which version of GC.

(I think he is just doing a Ride - Import File... and it crashes.)

Hugh - You can safely uninstall and reinstall the software.
Your data is removed when you do an uninstall.

LOL.

Your data is NOT removed when you do an uninstall.

Its funny how many times I've missed out the critical word in
statements like this.

Gareth,

Yes it happens while attempting to import a ride from the Garmin 500.
When you say the data is removed, I hope that means even though the
program
is removed the computer retains a file with the data that the new
download will auto find?

We're using GC version 2.0 build date November 29th 2010 on a Windows
XP machine.
It has functioned flawlessly through dozens of imports until today.

Thanks for the info and great work,

Hugh

Sounds like you tried to import a corrupted file. That file was written To you rider directory and it crashes the program every time you try to re launch.

To fix go to your rider directory (see wiki at bugs.goldencheetah.org ) something like where are my ride files located.
And MOVE (not delete) the newest ride to a new location. GC should startup if you relaunch.

If that works send us the file so we can troubleshoot. Also the folks at garmin might be able to fix he file if it is corrupt.

Jamie,

Just to be clear every thing works just fine until I attempt to
download the file. It never appeared to begin to download at all, just
and instant shutdown
immediately upon clicking "import file" from the rider tab. I'll see
if I can get to the rider directory to look for artifacts but will be
surprised to find anything.

Thanks for the additional ideas.

When you plug the Garmin500 in, does your system recognize it as a USB
disk? Can you navigate to it in explorer and copy the file to your
hard drive? My only thought is that you last imported a file from the
Garmin, unplugged it out without 'ejecting' first and somehow your OS
doesn't register it as a proper filesystem. But since it was the last
location from which a file was imported, GC tries to open the drive
and it doesn't exist or is corrupted in some way.

Sorry for the misinterpretation. I read a single post that said a window just pops up and then a crash made me think bad file.

Can you drag a file to he main gc window to import? That might be a workaround for the short term.

There is no evidence of a fit file written today but the following
show they were modified today.

Power Zones
metadata.xml
hr,zones
avatar.png

I did go to the rider and insert my wife's name in the blank space
this morning,
When the Garmin would not download I went in and removed the name just
in case it was causing the problem.

Hmmmm

Matt,

The computer does recognize it as a USB disc in its usual way, asking
what I'd like to open it with.
Interestingly it usually takes ~ 30 seconds or so for the computer to
do this. When I plugged the Garmin
in today the computer beeped essentially instantly. This was the first
time for such a rapid beep.
HMMMMMM that sound suspicious,

Thanks,

Hugh

I did set a copy of the file on my desktop.

Jaime,

I'm not certain how to do that operation. I could copy and paste if I
knew where to paste. Presently GC either fills the whole screen or
completely minimizes
so that it's impossible to just drag a file over.

Problem solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the end
it would appear all that was needed to get things back on track was
a complete computer shut down and restart. I can't believe that we
skipped often helpful step along the way.

Thank you all for your assistance.
