Errors trying to start appimage.

Hi. Just getting started with GC, I had 3.5 on my Linux PC running (tho' it did a core dump) and then tried 3.6 DEV which was having issues with the folders so I removed both and started again. Now I getthe following for both 3.5 and 3.6. Any ideas on the solution. Thanks.

During startup - Warning messages:
1: package "methods" in options("defaultPackages") was not found
2: package ‘datasets’ in options("defaultPackages") was not found
3: package ‘utils’ in options("defaultPackages") was not found
4: package ‘grDevices’ in options("defaultPackages") was not found
5: package ‘graphics’ in options("defaultPackages") was not found
6: package ‘stats’ in options("defaultPackages") was not found
7: package ‘methods’ in options("defaultPackages") was not found
Error: package ‘compiler’ does not have a namespace

Fatal error: unable to initialize the JIT
