Hello all

For the past couple of years I've tried to use GC in train mode on my trainer, but I've always had trouble. Every now and then I download the latest version and try it out. I've tried it this month and have gotten further than I ever have, although it did require a lot of poking and trial and error to get it to comply.

However, success, I have managed one workout on it, and have some questions about it that perhaps someone can help with

1. Is there a way to show sensor data prior to hitting start? this would help to validate that everything is working before starting the workout
2. Is there a way to auto start/stop when I stop pedalling? I had to stop half way through the workout to get water and I noticed the timer carried on
3. I have a crank based PM with built in cadence sensor, as well as a cadence/speed sensor that I use for speed only (no magnet on the crank, so it's not picked up). It looked like GC picked up both cadence sensors, and cadence continuously alternated between the real value (from the crank) and zero (from the cad/speed sensor). Is there a way around this?
4. I designed a custom workout, but while training with it I had to make sure to pay attention to notice when the target power values changed. In software like TrainerRoad you get some beeps as the timer counts down to zero. Is there anything similar in GC?
5. Is it possible to display text at specific points in the workout, much like TrainerRoad does?

I haven't gotten as far as customizing my training screen yet. One thing I want to add is the time left in the current interval/block/period before the next power change. Is that possible?

All in all GC is the most useable and stable it has ever been for me. I intend to carry on testing it and perhaps retire SportTracks if it does everything I need. Great work :)

Hi,

I can answer a couple of these;

1. Not as such. The ANT channels aren't opened until you hit start.
However, the latest development builds now prompt to save data or not
when you hit stop. This makes it easier to check all the sensors are
working as expected before starting & saving the 'real' session.

2. No auto stop, but you can pause/restart from the on-screen buttons.

3. This cadence issue should be fixed in the latest development builds.

There is a "lap time remaining" telemetry field, so you should be able
to add this to the display.

Development builds can be found at http://goldencheetah.stand2surf.net/

Regards,
Jon

Hi Jone

Thanks for the reply. I have now picked up the latest dev build and will give it a whirl later today. Regarding your answers...

1. That would explain the lag between hitting start and the workout actually starting. I'm not sure why it's done this way, but wouldn't it be better to start the channels up before hitting play?

2. Yes, I assumed I could hit stop, but thought it would be useful if it auto paused based on cadence or speed for example

3. I'll try it out later today

If anyone can help with the other questions I'd be most grateful

So far I'm liking the current GC. Previously when I tried it I hit too many bugs and weird behaviour, enough to put me off, but so far 3.1 has behaved quite well. Now just need to learn my way around

Its actually quite complicated since we need to know what devices you want to use and which telemetry to get from which device before we connect. You can select a few things before hitting start.

We could change the flow to be connect and then start, but that adds another step that would be quite annoying to many.

We are wary of this since (a) not everyone has a speed/cadence sensor and (b) with ANT+ connection drops can occur and lastly (c) why should the recording stop ?

Thats good to know, if you downloaded the development build it will be 3.2

Auto-pause would be useful, but speed might be the best option. Particularly in all or none intervals where you will want to "coast" for some recovery after a sprint and auto-pause would trigger during each recovery section.

But, as Mark says, ANT+ connection and lack of speed/cadence sensors makes this iffy. Though Gen 3 ANT+ USB sticks are MUCH better at this, as Zwift users are seeing. I have all 3 USB sticks, and the mini Gen 3 version has a much larger range through the house, causing me to have to turn off my Garmin before coming inside, or it will start transferring....

1. Understood, but couldn't that all be done in the Setup step, or changed when the Device is picked on the left?

2. I agree, if implemented it should be an optional setting for the user (as it is in both, trainerroad and perf pro). I'd find it very useful, but perhaps I'm the odd one

Yes, I'm on the 3.2 Beta now. So far no trouble :) :) :). Although I'm still a little confused, I'm slowly finding my way around

Where can you download the beta 3.2 version?

Thanks. I am having trouble downloading the workouts from the ergdb. It says the "workout directory is not configured. Please check preference settings"

Anyone know what I can do to fix this issue with downloading from ergdb?
