I am unable to get Golden Cheetah 3 to run real time with my Garmin
USB stick and Cyclops power tap Elite+.
NOTE: If I don’t have the stick in place when I hit the run button an
error pops up and says “Cannot open ANT + device”. After I insert
the stick, the elapsed time clock starts running but no statistics
show up.

I hope all relevant information is given below. Please let me know
what to check. Thanks,

Equipment:
Garmin Edge 500
Cyclops power tap Elite+
Garmin USB stick: 011-02209-00

Software: Golden Cheetah v3.0dev_20120101_Commit_cee35ab
Build date: Jan 3 2012 08:42:20
Device Setup:
Device Name: Power 1
Device Type: Native ANT +
Port Spec: (blank)
Profile: antid 1
Virtual: 0

OS: Windows 7 Professional
Drivers loaded and Garmin ANT agent is running
In the Garmin ANT agent window a magnifying glass continually rotates
with a clock and the following message appears:
Connection Status
USB ANT™ stick: Active
Searching for devices
When I right click on the ANT agent icon:
Garmin ANT agent 2.3.2
Pair with new devices: enabled

Is ctANT+ required?

I’m very new to this software, so I guess that my questions must be so
stupid they don’t warrant a reply.  Anyway for other NEWBIES, here is
what I learned about GC3 on Windows 7 Professional.

1) When the drivers for the Garmin ANT+ stick are installed the ANT
agent software is also installed.  You must exit this program before
running GC3.  This was fundamentally my problem which led me down many
erroneous paths.  Here are a few of the Red Herrings that I chased:

a. When you are starting to add a new ANT+ device manager
“Tools>Options>Devices”  do NOT enter a profile, I mistakenly took
this field to mean the ANT+ device number than can be found in your
Garmin Edge 500 set up menus.  (LEAVE THIS field blank, I think that
is noted in the WIKI instructions)

b. Even though the install instructions stated “A note for all
Operating System - Pairing with ANT+.  Please note that under ANT+
there is at this time no concept of Pairing. If you hit the Pair
button it will fail.  Please just start your training session in
GoldenCheetah and start pedaling.  GoldenCheetah will find your
devices and display the data.”  I was just compelled to try and pair!
DON’T TRY AND PAIR.  The instructions in WIKI are correct!

c. Lastly I thought maybe ctANT+ was required to set up virtual COM
ports.  This is absolutely NOT the case!  You don’t need ctANT+.

2) I have found the program to be a little “glitchley” detecting
devices, sometimes after the program starts but certainly after a
workout ends or a workout is stopped by the stop button.   The
software will not find my Cadence/speed detector, Heart Rate Monitor
or Power Meter (Powertap Elite+)   I found that if I remove and
reinsert the USB ANT+ stick that GC3 will find it every time without
issue.  I’m not sure if the developers would like me to open an
official bug or not?

I guess because there are quite a few posts here about the same thing, glad you got it to work though !

No need, it has already been raised (and hopefully fixed) but this was done after the last development build was posted on goldencheetah.stand2surf.net.

Thanks,

Next time check the wiki ;)

http://bugs.goldencheetah.org/projects/goldencheetah/wiki

All the realtime setup info is on the site.

There is other information there as well.

I have been updating all the v3.0 features so it is easier for people
to use.

I'm just having a hard time keeping up with the developers.
