Power meters have to be repaired, data goes missing. It would be nice if we could plug in estimated TSS values in the "metrics" tab for those files captured with devices like garmins when a garmin isn't paired for purposes of the Performance manager. I currently have 1.5 weeks of missing data form my PM and this feature would totally make my week as right now I'm kinda stuck using other software which allows me to do this.

What do you mean by "captured with devices like garmins when a garmin isn't paired" ?

There's a cool new FAQ available (for GC 3.0) and it has this:

1. MOST COMMON QUESTIONS OF ALL

1.1 How do I override / manually enter TSS for a ride?

The details chart on the analysis view allows you to override metrics on the
metrics tab. By default the most common metrics are listed, including average HR,
distance and so on. From v3.0 the default setup will also include TSS as a metric
you can override here.

If the metric is not there you will need to configure GoldenCheetah to allow it
to be shown. This is simple to do and described in 3.8 below.

Perhaps the development build of 3.0 I'm running doesn't have this? When I look into my settings I see no way to add the  override for TSS.

Sorry I meant when people are using a Garmin but don't have a PM paired.

Sorry, it's not clear to me what exactly is missing for you.
Here's the referenced "3.8" part that explains how to add TSS if
it's not available yet for editing:

3.8 How do I add a metric to the details screen (so I can override it) ?

If the metric you want (e.g. TSS) is not shown then you will need to add it via
the GoldenCheetah preferences pane. On Mac this is from the menu option
GoldenCheetah->Preferences whilst on Windows and Linux it is under
Tools->Options.

You will need to select 'Data Fields' option from preferences toolbar and then
the 'fields' tab. You will see a list of fields that are associated with a
particular screen tab. If you scroll down you should find entries for the
'Metrics' screen tab, you can insert a new entry here with the '+' button. You
should make sure the new entry is called exactly the same thing as the metric in
question.

For 'TSS' this is relatively straight forward. For others, e.g. 'Average Heart
Rate' you must make sure that the name includes spaces etc. Once your metric has
been added to the configuration you should save that and return to the details
screen where you can now maintain it.

If you are creating a manual entry then there is no 'details' tab in the dialog.
Once you have created the entry (and again in this case TSS can be entered in the
dialog) you should go to the details tab to maintain any other specific fields.
The manual entry dialog is designed to be simple and accept only the most common
of entries.

I finally got it to to work. I needed to change that it was a "Metric" into the "Screen Tab" filed. While this did work from a UI perspective I would hardly call it intuitive.

I also had to click and double click ~10-15 times to actually get it would actually let me to change either the name of the metric I was adding or the screen tab field.

How could the configuration screen be improved?

A dialogue box when adding items. One that has you fill in each field, perhaps even select from a drop down of available options based on what field with the ability to add your own where appropriate.

I clicked the "+" button four times because it didn't seem to work each time when really it was adding the new ones somehwere out of sight. I then had to click them in just the right spot to change their names. Without the user guide I would not have known that I could set the name to an existing metric value and it would start overriding it.

Can you raise a feature request maybe someone will pick this up in v3.1?

Hello,

I would like to configure GC to estimate TSS for a ride based on HR alone for sessions where I don't have a PM.

I've followed the thread below such that I can manually enter the figure but I need GC to make the estimate based on the data I have before I can enter a figure. THis was easy in GC 2.0 but in 3.0 this feature seems to have disappeared or, at the very least, is well camouflaged.

Can anyone help?

It's still there in 3.0. Ctrl-M or Activity->Manual activity entry

It doesn't use HR (it didn't in 2.x either), it just estimates based on
average of previous stress/hr or stress/distance.

If you're adding a TSS estimate to a ride that doens't have power, you
can go through the manual ride entry screen to get the estimate, don't
save it, and then add the estimate to the ride you have already
downloaded to GC. Same method as in 2.x.

Many thanks Eric.

It's a shame that average HR doesn't seem to effect the TSS guestimate. My workout was at the velodrome and so because I've got a high average speed for the duration/distance it's guessing a much higher TSS than I think I've actually earnt. It's close enough, and I think I've worked with power and TSS enough to use it as a starting point, then adapt it based on my RPE & RPI.

You can now manually specify what TSS to use in a manual entry.
It is not an HR based metric, so any estimate from HR is bunkum.
If you want to use power based metrics use a power meter,
Otherwise, TRIMP is there for HR based athletes.

Apologies for the thread necromancy...

In the current FAQ it says

The thing is that I can't find 3.9. I _think_ it refers to this page

However when I try to follow the instructions (I want to manually add / override TRIMP), I don't get the same s the default ones

Thanks,

Steve

That's because TRIMP is not a name of a metric, try using TRIMP Points/TRIMP Zonal Points/etc
