Was any preliminary work / investigation done on this? I made that one off-the-cuff suggestion but maybe it's not a good one - never really delved into it at all!

I do have some time to toss at this now but if some stuff was started out-of-band I don't want to reproduce or step on any toes...

I don't think any work has been done on this. Please add kardianos to any code reviews you send to gerrit.

Sarah updated and uploaded a new CL to support this. I gave the CL a quick look and I don't see any reason this won't make it in go1.9.
