Note also that there are *lots* of knobs to twiddle for trade-offs w/r/t serialization: speed is only one aspect.

Others include:

   - schema vs free-form

   - size of serialized data

   - seekable (can you find/unpack one piece or do you always need do the entire thing)

   - cross-language compatibility

   - future-proofing (for schema'd formats, how does schema evolution work?)
