They look very smart.

I believe those are squirrels.

Could be squirrel suits...

I captured the image from a website with a vicious anti-gopher attitude: http://www.floridapest.com/pest_guide/vertebrate/gopherpage.html.  This page has a different image.  In an unabashed example of hate speech, they refer to gophers as "pests"!

And the first image-name claimed they were "Fighting gophers": fighting-gopher-01.jpg (460×468). Sounds like a football team.
But I now think Michael Jones is right, they're wearing squirrel suits.

From the wikipedia I guess people directly affected have their reasons to not share the affection (as that of people on this list).
The nature of destruction described in the link above is inline with what wikipedia states and *seems* fact based.

I am not knowledgeable about gophers but in my part of the world I know for a fact that some species of squirrels and rodents cause destruction to agricultural crops affecting the livelihood of many small time farmers.

That someone chose it as a mascot for a kick-ass language does not mean much (to people affected adversely).

I have had one of the blue plastic mascots for some time and he's been very quiet and caused no agricultural problems.

Once mine ate a radish from my plate, but we had a serious talk and
since then he has been very polite.

Mine is of the plush variety and seems to have more of an appetite for the bugs which infest code.  I have but to describe my problem to him and a fix invariably becomes apparent.
