I was wondering if, at the moment, there are any packages or other
means for accessing ZIP files?

I have been watching Go for a while now, and as a good learning
experience in Go, I figured that I would attempt to create some
packages to provide APIs for accessing and modifying office open xml
formats (MS word/excel/powerpoint, not openoffice.org), as thats about
the only distinct talent I can contribute to the Go community right
now. However, the foundation of this is opening and modifying ZIP-
format files.

Do you need to write zip files or is it sufficient to read them?

I just spent the afternoon putting this together:
http://github.com/nf/zip

It's a simple ZIP file reader written in Go, supporting store and
deflate. In its minimal state, it's probably useful for only some
people's unzipping needs.

Eventually, I would need to both read and write ZIP files. Though
between the two, I can make far more progress being able to read the
files, so I'll likely use Andrew's work to avoid having too much
placeholder code.

Thanks for whipping that up, too.
