With
the apparent decease of
TrueCrypt this week, I have to admit, I feel left wanting a comparable replacement: cross-platform, reliable, open-source, and fairly simple to use. Even with modern OSes coming bundled with built-in encryption features, they usually lack one of cross-platform support, encrypted file containers, encrypting portable/flash drives, or plausible deniability (hidden partitions/containers). And the major ones (BitLocker and FileVault) are proprietary.
I'd love to see a TrueCrypt replacement written in Go. I believe it's feasible and I think Go is a good candidate. (Is there already a TrueCrypt equivalent in Go?)
Of course, this is no small task, and heaven knows I don't have the security skills to contribute (much) or any means to fund it. I would think that if the project got any traction, maybe even a Kickstarter-like campaign, it could receive sufficient donations. There is an effort on
truecrypt.ch to kind of revive the TC program and ensure it has a future.
I believe the need for robust, open-source security software has never been greater than now. I'm posting this here in case -- on the rare possibility -- anyone in the Go community who is skilled in the security sector would give the project some consideration.
