13th Age games

Okay, I do love a good fantasy yarn, so I'm thinking of running 13th Age. But before I recruit online, I wanted to check how everyone's availability is for a couple of 13th Age of the Highlands games. Weeknights, say on Thursday night in Cheras. The idea would be for Eugene to take part in the wrap-up for the current Red Master story on the moon, so that we can shuffle the character into retirement and decide where we're going next with Highlands.

On work front, any weekday nights or weekend should be OK after this weekend - with exceptions some exceptions.

Happy news: My wife is expecting end Mar, my actual availability is in the next 2-3 months may be a little difficult (I have no idea how much time it may, or may not, take to manage).

That said, instead of planing against the unknown, we can commit to a day suitable for Doug. After a quick discussion, we think we can manage a few hours a week leave for me. We can go for that and see how it works out. If manageable Liz may be able to stay longer.

Nylislaele pulls her sword out of the lich to slap away another attempt of his ghastly cold touch. Too slow. Again. Ice sear through her nervous system in an instant, as her heart slows to a stop. "Not like this", she thought, "...but no matter". she had kept him locked down and unable to harm anyone else long enough.

She takes a step back, smirks weakly and holds a silly grin on her bloodied face. "No more spells you today, Sir Feline Rear Award!"

Her blurry form takes on a solid outline and glowing arcane tattoos wink out. Her normally pale complexion is visibly whiter than usual. As her layers of spells dissipate, her weapon shrinks into a rather rude gesture on her hand before vanishing in a wisp of frost.

A quick intake of breath through her greenish black lips, and her bloodshot eyes roll up - she falls over on her side. She catches blurry glimpse of Iris running towards her, fumbling on her backpack, before everything fades to darkness...

Three things I'd like to ask/comment on:

1. I vote that it should now be King Diamante The White, Savior of Dragonkind, Lord of the Frozen Halls, Master of the Dune Seas, Chosen of Lemma.

2. Given Twilight's arc, can I use my background "In The Shadow of the Moon" to pull off acts of minor divinity (like getting a moonflower to grow out of my palm)? This background was intended to reflect Twilight's earlier travels across the moon, shadowfell and lunar underdark and her connection to Eclipse. I think it'd be a fair reflection of her development since she'd probably be experimenting with the whole "bleeding moonflowers" thing since she found out about it back at the Archmage's citadel. Nothing serious mechanics-wise, but in a character-relevant fashion (to impress someone or tap some lunar artifact or such)

3. With regards to items, her nonmagical inventory include a homemade locket to house Sehanine's last gift to her and a studded leather breastplate she's worn since she started out from Orrin Village right at the start of the original Highlands. Maybe one or the other could have acquired true magical properties? 'course she could just be given something else to use...

If you die, you will do it absolutely fabulously.  Your hair will look perfect, your clothes will look elegant and stylish and everyone will talk for months about how awesome it looked when you finally cacked it in the most rad way possible - even your enemies (who will from that point forward refer to you as 'The Dude'!   A movie will be made about your death and you'll be played by Sean Bean - even if you're a woman.

Furthermore, Dragonborn's are unable to take credit for your death if you have this feat.  People will just say 'yeah right' even if they saw him actually kill you.

Ok, so I've had a quick look at the Book of L3w7 and there're a few options I'm looking at:

1. Moonflower Armor (a.k.a Armor of Butterflies). I like this simply because I get to envisage Twilight surrounded by a constant glowing swirl of moonflowers floating in an ethereal breeze around her. Mechanically, this is probably the least useful option since it only allows me to give my armor's +2 bonus to someone else. Since Twilight will probably need that bonus herself most of the time (and it does nothing to her weak MD), this is more a flavor choice than anything.

2. Gauntlets of Spell Deflection. Can't really think of flavor here - this is a straight up counterspell item. For Twilight it adds up to a +9 roll vs. Caster MD to deflect a spell (STR + Level). Way more useful than a +16 save to counter, but only once per battle. 

3. Taskmaster's Belt. Again, can't quite think of flavor here but something that can allow me to trigger Sorrow without hurting myself has GOT to be on a list for consideration... assuming the GM rules that I can use this belt in that fashion. 

4. Circlet/Diadem of Revelation. Take only half damage from any attack targeting MD. Again, a VERY useful item in light of last battle and Twilight's weakness. Also its a GM plot device since it means everytime Twilight negates damage with this thing, she gets to go on a vision quest.  

5. Helm/Diadem of Fortunate Dodging. Was considering this. I get to turn one miss against AC or PD into a fumble. Only problem is Twilight's AC and PD aren't spectacular either.

6. Bog standard Armor of Iron Will. Its... the most conservative choice. Problem is, its boring. 

So, opinions?

What items does Twi already have other than Sorrow?  The gauntlets look useful for Twi... (although it could be a trap item since casters always have high MD, and we're fighting very high level casters), but Twi may need more basic boosts such as more HP or armor. Circlet looks enticing though considering Twi's MD is so low, taking half damage from whatever gets through her MD sounds good?

Sister's Sorrow: Champion Tier Longsword (at-will: 2d10 damage to target and to self), default +2 Attack & Damage
Adaptive Shield: Champion Tier (?) Shield (Triggered on Hit: +4 to last Defense hit), default +10HP 

I can't remember if the shield got uptiered or not. It should be an Adventurer Tier item since I got it all the way back when fighting Syrenjax in the Highlands but the bonus I had on my Char sheet is +10HP, which is a Champion Tier bonus.

Also, totally in favor of Nylis getting "Cloak of Two Worlds" simply because that would make porting Twilight right next to enemy casters a totally viable tactic.

Yeah, looks like Kai is right about some party members being due for an upgrade since Twi is level 5 and has only 2. The advice from the manual is to look for armor for Twi at least at some point- so that Twi's stats can keep up with the game math I guess. However, as a barbarian Twilight can probably buck all convention and do her own thing anyway, so don't feel that you have to follow this advice strictly :P

The Lulz: +2MD 
Circlet of Revelation (recharge 11+): When you’re hit by an attack that targets MD, you can take half damage from that attack. However, in that moment, you’re blasted by a divine revelation or vision so profound you cannot ignore it. The GM may describe the vision, or ask you to do it, or get another player to provide it, or use some other random method like flipping through the 13th Age rulebook and having your character ‘see’ the first picture you come to. Whatever that vision is, your character is temporarily obsessed with it. Quirk: This item’s really just a bit bundle of quirk wrapped in a little bit of damage mitigation. It’s pretty quirky already.

Suggestion for Nylis :P

Two Worlds Cloak (recharge 16+): When you teleport, you may bring one extra passenger along with you, wrapped in the voluminous folds of this purple silk cloak. Quirk: Emotional obsession with your extra passenger.

What are the rest of you looking out for? I know Lukas still has slots for Necklaces, Rings, Helms, Belts, Cloaks, Gauntlets, Tomes and Holy Symbols. There's some really cool stuff in the Book of Loot for tankers and spellcasters. Not to mention some really hilarious shit.

Lukas is pretty good on the item front. Two +1 items, one +2 sword. Would be nice to get one of those up to +2, but the Jeweled Glove in original manual looks enticing as well.

Helm of the Vigilant Commander (recharge 11+): When a nearby enemy targets a nearby ally that has 25 hit points or fewer (epic: 50 or fewer, and it’s recharge 6+), you may redirect the attack to target yourself instead. You must choose to do this before the attack is rolled. Quirk: Savagely protective of allies.

Gloves of the Healing Touch (standard action – recharge 16+): These pearly-white gloves are usually splattered with dried blood and the mud of the battlefield, but shine all the brighter for it. When you cast a healing spell (or use a power that heals in a similar way, like lay on hands), you may touch an additional target. That extra target also gets the benefit of the healing effect. Quirk: Martyrdom complex.

I should be fine (no news contesting it at the moment). A note that 3rd Oct may be a common replacement holiday, but the actual public holiday is 2nd Oct. 

We could try weekday nights, but that usually ends up rushing the traffic and shorter session than a weekend can afford.

That aside:

A straight up MD bonus may be better for Twilight and the party as a whole than damage negation. The latter is good for her to reduce damage from her low-ish HP pool (which I think is not that low), but status effects on her is as dangerous to the party; if not more.

Then again, if the average caster pitted against the party hits high vs MD on average, small straight up bonus to MD may be more useful to someone with already high MD than one with low MD.

Well, its a Circlet so apart from Damage Reduction, its also +2 to MD baseline. For me, it means I can suck 74HP worth of damage (instead of a potential 145) if necessary to avoid the Confusion effect from the kind of Demon attack I took last time. Its risky, but then I just need one good crit to obliterate almost anything.

Twilight is like a cruise missile - she only needs to survive and stay on target long enough to get off that ONE good hit.
