On hot days, air conditioning demand drives up the price and emissions of electricity. Reducing non-essential electricity usage can help the grid avoid bringing the most expensive, dirtiest power plants online.
Safety and staying cool comes first, but try reducing electric usage where you can:
- Turn the AC up a few degrees--or off if it's safe to do so. Use fans, drink an iced tea, close the blinds, and take other energy-saving steps to stay cool.
- Wait til after the peak to do laundry or run the dishwasher.
- Turn off or unplug appliances you aren't using.
- Stop charging your electric car (if you have one).
Curious about peak demand and why peak shaving is important? We're holding two webinars next week to talk about it! Check out our program's web page or watch our recent webinar recording about Shave the Peak.
As always, let me know if you have any questions.
