The City Council's Committee of the Whole will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feburary 8, to discuss a proposed polystyrene ban in the city. The idea of the proposed ban was introduced to the Council by two Medford High School students at its meeting of February 25, 2020, through paper 20-078, which read:
"Petition by Ellie Hunt, 41 Wason Street, Medford, MA 02155 and Juliette Franks, 48 Summer Street, Medford, MA 02155 to present a petition created by Medford High School students requesting that the City Council ban the use of polystyrene in the City of Medford due to their impact on the environment."
The City Council has invited Janelle Austin of KP Law and student representatives from the Center for Citizenship and Social Responsibility (CCSR) to attend Tuesday's meeting, which will take place in the Alden Chambers at City Hall and on Zoom.

A similar petition created by a Medford High School student led to the city pass an ordinance in 2019 that prohibited the use of most thin plastic, single-use shopping bags in retail establishments in the city.
